I would prefer a full-on beast race or an undead / demonic race done properly or something else that's not mostly human with different ears or some horns. Where something like Skyrim has argonians who are lizard people who have reptilian heads, claws, a tail, and scales all over their bodies, the equivalent of the khajiit in FFXIV are anime catgirls, mostly human so they can be "cute." Well, I don't want to be cute.

They really dropped the ball with the au ra too. Mostly human, just added some horns and a tail. Couldn't even go all out on the scales either. C'mon. I would even accept the ability to play as a moogle to be a drastic improvement at this point.

You gotta remember, everything in FFXIV is connected to a strict law, which is lore. I think they have a specific underline of what they can do with the lore. Something cannot be added without some sort of prerequisite lore. Like the Au Ra was introduced way back through the MSQ. It's just my thinking that, they will not add a random race out of nowhere. So for a Viera like race to be implemented, we probably need to go towards a enchanted rain forest of some sort in the MSQ. Though it has been hinted 4.0 may involve the ocean and boats, which may introduce possibly sahagin like humanoids.
While I do not really mind what happens, we probably won't see Viera for a long time. We still haven't yet to explore the eastern continent and who knows, maybe there is more lands toward the north/south/west

They haven't retconned anything in XIV as far as I'm concerned.(A case can be made with a certain Lalafell). But as far as introduction of Viera, they can always change a few features and call them something else to avoid them clashing with Ivalice's lore. They've done something similar already with XI(Looking at you Roe and Lalafell).

Most Viera (atleast in XII) also didn't care much for anything outside of the jungle, and those who do ultimately had to choose to either not care, or leave their birthplace for good. In a way Gridania is very similar to Golmore Jungle, though Gridania is a little less strict and more diverse (in part due to the Calamity weakining the elements).

Also is it really stealing if all three games are made by the same company, and part of the same series?

They haven't retconned anything in XIV as far as I'm concerned.

Except for the case of Acheron/Phlegethon (which was neccessary), I can't really think of anything, either.
