Following the path set on the mini-map/ground also helps to avoid aggroable mobs. Mobs around the path have a tendency to be level 3 marmots.I know I'm a little late, but I started school so less time for forums. In my experience instant transportation doesn't automatically kill immersion, but it does seem to cause less appreciation for the world. In Eorzea I wouldn't really want to not have instant transportation since there aren't that many nuances within the gameworld (plants that are cool to look at, weird cave not used for ANYTHING [not even a cut scene]). But once chocobos come our you might find us appreciating the world a little more. My thing is in XI the map was so, IDK, if you followed the road in xi that was the long way, seems like some zones in XIV are made specifically so we wouldn't jank hug this wall or something to get through zones faster, just something I noticed. example "lemme cut this corner here so I can get through this long winding loop in Gridania faster"....."log wtf, why is there a log covered by a bush?" :[ guess I'll stop cutting corners like a lazy person you got me SE!
Follow the yellow brick road (b'.')b
I also find the whole minimap thing to ruin the sense of immersion as well. I end up looking at it more than i look at the actual world. And i realize i could prob remove it or something but thats not the point. Its conveniant and all so i will use it. But at the same time it will make me feel more disjointed from the game...
Maybe if it was like -really- seethrough it would help
Mew!
I have a GPS in my car. That ruins my sense of immersion in the real world.I also find the whole minimap thing to ruin the sense of immersion as well. it ruins my sense too :x nothing beats a good old fashioned giant map in your windshield ^^
and the mini map thing is more like theres no reason to really go off the path most of the time so instead of watching the pretty world they made and spent hours on when you run from place to place you watching a line denoting a path on the minimap
this would -easily- be fixed by implementing agro mobs so people would actually have to watch the game and not the map.

I see your point. Chocobos are only going to make the 'follow the yellow brick road' method even more popular.it ruins my sense too :x nothing beats a good old fashioned giant map in your windshield ^^

Kinda nice then that gathering forces you off the beaten path, sometimes into areas you've never seen before. (I went fishing in Mor Dhona just so I'd get some eye-candy whilst getting 'materials' to turn into shards and sand)
They did mention somewhere in a dev blog though that treasure chests were going to be added into the game as an open world thing, you don't need to be in a leve now to find one, you could just randomly come across one. If there was information on what kind of things we could expect from random treasure chests, it may give more people reason to wander into the wilderness.
However not knowing what you may get then receiving a 'blue' weapon or item of clothing could be more exciting.
Maybe they could just give hints. Hold the surprise, but let them know that there is indeed a surprise.
And now another episode of "At Home With Azury".it ruins my sense too :x nothing beats a good old fashioned giant map in your windshield ^^

"La la la, I'm playing XIV while wearing my fuzzy Hello Kitty slippers and sipping on a bottle of ramune."
*sudden, tense music begins playing*
"Oh no! The game! It's...taken control of where I point my eyes! Can't...stop...looking...at...minimap.........immersion...fading...N...NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!"
I couldn't help but lol.And now another episode of "At Home With Azury".

I can actually picture that scene happening.
I laughed, but I think they should give us the option to turn it off if we want. I don't think there's anything wrong with that. And now another episode of "At Home With Azury".

Press 'M' for map anyways.
Only thing I use the mini-map for is to determine if the cliff infront of me is scalable or not. If there's a black line on the MM, it's not, if there's no black line, I can run up it even if it's practically vertical.
There's a funny area to do this just west of Camp Skull Valley, nestled inside and small thicket surrounded by cliffs. Inside the thicket is a collection of near vertical very thin rock faces that you can run across, looks hilarious seeing your character bounce up and down like a yo-yo as you go along.
This unusual way to navigate however, does not affect my immersion. I perceive merely as a small snippet of comedy value that has no real importance to the world as a whole.
A character is able to sense gathering points as if by magicI also find the whole minimap thing to ruin the sense of immersion as well. I end up looking at it more than i look at the actual world. Perhaps they are also able to sense the localised geography of the area they're in also as if by magic.
Does this help stop the mini-map from decreasing the immersion?
And at this point, at 748 posts across 75 pages... does anyone care anymore?
