I want a new emote.

I want a new emote.
While I agree with most of this, I think it is important to bring up that many people have alts. Alts that weren't in existence when said event was out, but have the achievement/items on a main char. So I (and many others) were paying a sub at the time to participate, and yet would have to buy said items to have them on an alt. There are a number of ways SE could make it so that any char on an account with the achievement could get said items without paying money, and my Au Ra would welcome any of them.
Edit: Including, but not limited to: Making achievements account-wide, checking the achievements of all chars on an account when determining whats on any chars salvagers, or simply removing the untradeable flag to allow people to put these items in their FC banks and whatnot.

I must have missed the announcement that this game was f2p. I'm pretty sure I'm still paying a subscription AND SE is asking me to pay for things on top of it.
So, I was subbed during the event. I got the items. After a short break, I returned and sought a fresh start by rerolling characters with my husband. We didn't have all of our items anymore, but we were comforted with the thought that we'd just be able to grab them again once the holidays rolled around.
Nope.
I'm not sure how many times I have to point out that SE changed how the entire system works. You used to be able to buy the past event items with gil at the same time you earned the new ones. Now, you cannot.
Yes, this. All of this. If the unlocks were account-wide, this would solve so many issues. It wouldn't change the disturbing F2P cash shop nature of it all, but it would at least not be such a big "f you" to subscribers. While I agree with most of this, I think it is important to bring up that many people have alts. Can't say I'm a fan of any of this especially the emote.
Like always I'll vote with my wallet and they wont see a dime from me for Cash shop stuff, sadly I have a feeling there are far too many who don't agree with me.

All interesting solutions to the problem. As someone with seven characters on one server alone that would be something I appreciate. They could also stem to make purchases from the Mogstation to be account wide, rather than individual, if we're going that route.
That said, I rarely get a full holiday set on all of my characters. I tend to focus upon the ones in which the seasonal items would best suit, and not sweat the rest.

An event is more fun if there is a wider variety of costumes and items available during the event for everyone.
Having over a hundred dollars of added services in a game, the majority of which were once free to subscribers, is unattractive to new players who are considering a game that already has a monthly subscription cost in addition to a box price.
It's rational to be concerned about these points. It isn't entitlement or illogical to be worried at the direction the cash shop is heading. The future of the game and the length of time FFXIV is with us depends on new players. I want this game to be as attractive as possible to new people, and small holiday events overshadowed by massive amounts of paid items isn't the way I think the game should be represented to incoming people.
This entire argument is silly. The old event items on the cash store do not impact the gameplay in any way, so why does it matter?
Say a movie theater offers a special t-shirt for free to anyone who come to watch a movie on a certain day, and only for that day. The following week they start selling the t-shirt to people who come to watch a movie. This is the same concept.
Does the free t-shirt impact the way you watch a movie? The vast majority would agree with me in saying it does not. Does offering to sell the t-shirt to people who missed the day to get it for free impact the way you watch a movie? Again, the vast majority would agree with me in saying it does not. This is the same concept that is being employed here.
It's fluff. Fluff not needed to enjoy the game. The fact that there are complaints about it just makes it all reek of entitled self-righteousness that borderlines on neurotic.
Now, if they start selling access to certain jobs or instant-leveling tickets, THEN we can reopen this discussion.

The question I have is why did it suddenly start mattering so much with this event? I started playing the game just after the Little Ladies event last year and waited the better part of an entire year to pick up those peach blossom earrings, and after the cash shop went up I just bought them when the event came back around. It sucked that the dynamic had changed the way it had, but $3 for an item I'd spent a year waiting on, it literally wasn't this big a deal to me. On the other hand, I haven't seen the forum lit with this much anti cash shop sentiment since last October.
Well for me, I didn't even know SE had done this, as I took a break before Halloween last year and came back just a month ago. So, I had no clue. I thought I'd be able to get the old summer outfits on my new character (rerolled on a new server). So that's why it's "suddenly" mattering to me. :SThe question I have is why did it suddenly start mattering so much with this event? Because when limited vanity that people actually want appear in the Mogstation, all hell breaks loose. Nowadays it just feels like more of a hip trend that people are trying to spread around. "Oh you don't like the optional items? Well I don't either now!"The question I have is why did it suddenly start mattering so much with this event? And a lot of people left the game towards the end of ARR, be it they got bored or whatever. Now that they're returning for Heavensward and have missed whatever events they did, they expect to get everything they missed out on for free.
And then there's the people who expect all MMO's to follow some specific non existent guidelines for their model type, and what they can or cant do based on it. Get ready for this same sense of entitlement when the Eerie set from last Halloween is added to the Mogstation this October too. I'm sure quite a lot of people missed that one.
