... associates degree... still learning... but the signal travels over the network through locations to get to its destination, these are called hops, the more hops usually means more time to send and receive, though the hops could also be shorter or longer depending on the media used, fiber wire being quicker than lets say satellite. ocean vs land wouldn't matter due to much due to submarine communication cables.
