That's a rather sad way to look at character progression if that is the general gist.

To pop that theory they did make a point of showing how two of the Scions were pretty much defenseless without their weapons due to being captured by the garleans during the earlier story line portion. Minfillia, Papylmo and Urianger were taken by white armored chick and were all tied all and stuff and they were helpless as newborn babes without their weapons.

Note that I am not saying it is wrong but if it is right, it really makes me think a lot less of the characters, including my own, since all we are in terms of skill is the weapon/tool we wield. It would validate the insane gear grind I suppose but that is the part of the game that I hate the most.

As for all our feats and accomplishments, we weren't alone. We had several other skilled and capable (heh) adventurers alongside us to achieve those victories. Ever since Sastasha we've been told to find other adventurers to accompany us on those forays into the unknown.
Pretty much this for my thoughts, though in some ways I wish they would also showcase which fights exactly are ment to be us alone and which ones are with other adventurers. Castrum and Prae would defintly be in a party, but its kinda hard to figure out how 7 other adventurers came to help us against Nabriales.

Unless they meant 1v1 even then we could take on two people at the same time and defeat them of about the same power range.
If we even just had a four-man team (plus or minue Raubhan), I would cry foul myself if we lost, but 2v1 with just Raubahn on our side an unwinnable battle could have worked, imo. He would be considered boss level which even for fates can be considred difficult, and would probably be tuned either to take us down to 1 or something. Again, Beatrix is what I'm thinking here.

Consider it more that we specifical train in certain styles of fighting, and thus being deprived of our weapon severly hampers our ability to fight. Monks are the closest you could say to asking "well why couldn't we fight!" even if you couldn't pull out a weapon, though they never fight barehanded, and hitting armor would probably still hurt alot. My explanation anyways.

I do think that a lot of people are underestimating the combat potential of Ul'dah's elite. If Ul'dah was that weak Garlemald would have just rolled over without breaking a sweat. We are possibly the strongest, if not one of the strongest warriors in Eorzea but there are plenty of ways of taking down a strong enemy even if your guys are a little weaker.

Or are we seriously claiming that no one in Ul'dah except Raubahn comes close to our strength? We have no idea what foes the Monetarists could have under their pay. We do know they have elite soldiers beyond what we saw in that cutscene.

While I agree on that point Belhi, I would say that Ilbred probably is their strongest fighter, as Raubahn to the Immortal Flames (outside of our own character possibly). Not saying they wouldn't have other powerful fighters, but probably not as good as him. Time will tell though.

It wouldn't have been a one-on-one fight, either. The dining hall / royal palace was swarming with Brass Blades and Crystal Braves; even if we had our weapons, it's unlikely we could have taken them all on.

As I've pointed out before as well, there's nothing saying the standing armies of any city are any less competent than you. The reason you get the job of dealing with Primals is because of the Echo - we can't be tempered, so it's much less risky for us to deal. Others have downed Primals in the past, so declaring yourself the most awesome combatant in Eorzea because you've felled an upwards of seven by that point doesn't really work.

We're not the greatest fighters in Eorzea, and even if we were, the events at the end of 2.55 are very political and largely outside of our ability to influence.

I think people are also ignoring the Sultansworn. While they weren't in the room, there would almost certainly have been some nearby and a good portion of them are taking Monetarist coin. Brass Blades might be average soldiers but Sultansworn are elites both in there gear and training.

Weapon Damage > all stats. Have you ever fought with a broken weapon? Even if everything else is working, you do peanuts for damage. If they took your weapon, you wouldn't be able to fight at all.

I wouldn't use stats to justify lore because they are two separate things. However, lore-wise, SCH/SMN wouldn't be able to do jack without their books (which explains why if you were a healer you didn't try to help Nanamo, well, asides from the obvious they can't just give people an alternate path just because they were on x class).
