in ffxiv:
1. hardcore mechanic content (coil)
2. Crafting
3. Tomestones
4. PVP
5. social raids (24 mans)
6. Questing (zodiac)
not in ffxiv
7. armor mods (have a piece of armor be made out of 3 items, and be able to switch any of the sub items to make entirely new armor)
8. Cash shop
9. Persistent object (pick up a sword off the ground, for only that battle)
10. heirloom (build the treadmill right into leveling)
11. pre-set setups (determined by the game itself)
12. Mutations (your sword is generated directly from your body, as a bone blade of death; skill point based weapons)

Not saying all of these are great gear methods, but naming complete.
