I do not mind new players.
I do, however, mind new players that make 0 effort to be decent at the game when entering into MMO situations. (However, this does not mean I get nasty. Silently annoyed, maybe, but I rarely say anything)
For a tank, it explains what enmity is in your class quests, and all of your tooltips /tell/ you what they do. If a new player cannot take 4 seconds to read what their new skill does, I am not going to spoon-feed them. Why should I waste my time typing out a long explanation when they could not even read a tiny snippet of a tooltip? The active help explains most of this, so there is no excuse of never having the knowledge of what does what.
Especially in a tanking or healing situation, when you kind of have to be a bit more on top of your game. It is my job to help new players on possibly complex tasks, not. "Does damage in a cone in front of you increases enmity" means "will hit all the mobs in front of you and make them stay focused on you."

Also not to mention that for most jobs the /next skill you are supposed to use will light up for you/.

Yes, I was new once. Yes, I read the tooltips. No, I never had anyone be condescending/nasty/annoyed with me, because I made an effort through the tutorials and tooltips that pop up on your screen. Now after quite a few months of gameplay, i feel like I am quite confident in my FFXIV success.

I don't really see this as a good reason to not help people. There's a lot of nuances to skills that don't really come across in tooltips that people that are new to MMOs won't really understand. For example, you may see that X skill gives enmity but how are you supposed to know from the tooltip that HOLY CRAP RAGE OF HALONE IS CRAZY HATE compared to something like Flash which does its hate up-front without combo'ing?

Almost every time I go into Cutter's Cry I have to teach a BLM that spamming Fire 3 is bad because they look at the skill description and see it has a lot more potency than Fire but don't realize that you can cast a ton more Fires than Fire 3s before having to change to Umbral Ice.

Then there's weird cases like a L50 SMN I know that never used Bane because tanks would never be able to pull hate off of him in dungeons once he got it, because the level you get Bane some players don't have jobs unlocked and PLD in particular does not have Shield Oath yet so their AOE tanking is spotty.

Taking a minute of your time to make a run go much more smoothly is worth it, but obviously only if the person is willing to take the advice. It's much better than grumbling about it the entire run.

    Exactly.

If you don't want to learn your class (which is how I look at it) why do you expect me to teach it too you? There's so many guides and videos out there that explains everything. Yet people refuse to look at those or just read the skill description.

When I started tanking on WAR which was way different than PLD (what I started off with) I admit, I was pretty terrible. BUT I read guides, watched videos and then went and grabbed mobs and a few people and practice grabbing aggro and holding it.

If people are expected to look at a guide to learn how to play a game there's something wrong. I would love if everyone would look at what the skill description says (it's all the info you really need in my opinion), but sadly many people don't. Some people have the mentality of "Reading is boring and I get nothing out of it, this is a game I don't want to read", and it goes for story, dialogue, and information alike. This is the world we live in, hate to say. I can't force anyone to read anything of that sort, but if they at least read the chatbox and try what is advised (in a non-condescending way of course) it will possibly alleviate headaches for everyone.

Again, it's great you used guides to your advantage, but there are many people who dislike the notion of having to use a guide. When I learned to tank on GLD/PLD I had already gotten BRD and WHM to 50. I had a fairly clear understanding at that point of the tank's role. Needless to say, I wasn't good at first either, but I quickly adjusted without guides. But I'm one of those people who knew what to expect and enjoy learning the different mechanics and nuances. New tanks who have never played another MMO didn't and/or will not look up what a tank is in an MMO, and making that person's experience even worse is just plain idiotic.

Some things will have to be explained whether we like it or not, and the best way to do it is without insulting the player.

I say guides because for some people it takes a bit more than reading the skill description to understand what x does. So reading a guide for better understanding is perfectly fine, it's not to play the game but to actually learn your class. I get it that somethings will have to be explained but basic things are usually rarely explained. You usually have to stop the entire dungeon and break down the entire class for the person. Even if a person doesn't want to read a guide, there's videos. Do want to watch those? That's okay ask a FC mate, don't want to do that? Go out in the world and grab some mobs and notice what skill does what. There's really no reason to ever go in a dungeon with randoms and you don't know the basics of your class, like how overpower works, etc.
