I'm disappointed, but mostly because that means it's one less viable candidate to join the tank pool. We don't have many jobs that can convincingly fit the role of tank, and SAM was one of them.

* The sad thing is that FFXIV turned RDM into a turret, and people think that's what it's supposed to be. It's supposed to combine sword and magic into something more, not spend the bulk of gameplay spamming spells and jump into melee for only 3 GCDs before scurrying back to the back line like good little casters.
* Design ideas:
Red Mage - COMPLETE (https://tinyurl.com/y6tsbnjh), Chemist - Second Pass (https://tinyurl.com/ssuog88), Thief - First Pass (https://tinyurl.com/vdjpkoa), Rune Fencer - First Pass (https://tinyurl.com/y3fomdp2)
More Samurai hype ^^

You realize the name of the expansion in Japanese is ALSO Heavensward, right? http://jp.finalfantasyxiv.com/heavensward/off-topic but what the heck, Ishgard was in the name of the expansion in JP? Why not in english? I hate when the localization team goes batty and comes up with some random name for things. It ends up sucking bad...no offense to anyone that likes the name, but it just sounds so lazy. sounds like they just asked people to think of any random name they thought sounded cool and put it in a hat to be drawn.
on topic, I guess its cool they may release sam in the future.
It is extremely common for Japanese companies to produce material and name it in English, then use a subtitle to back-translate it into Japanese for the Japanese audience. Source: I have a degree in Japanology :|
The official name of the expansion in Japanese is
Heavensward: Final Fantasy XIV Online
蒼天のイシュガルド ファイナルファンタジーXIV
You can see it in the banner at the bottom of the page http://jp.finalfantasyxiv.com/pr/ . Notice how the Japanese text is significantly smaller and off to the side. It's there as a subtitle, the NAME of the game is Final Fantasy XIV Online, NOT ファイナルファンタジーXIV, and the expansion is named Heavensward, NOT 蒼天のイシュガルド. If you take issue with the Japanese using English names as official names for products, you can take that up with the entire country of Japan and its culture?
On topic, I'm not surprised. Despite wearing heavy armor, classically Samurai has been a job with heavily damaging moves like Bushido, supplemented with minor debuffs like the Weapon/Armor Break-style moves. (and Gil Toss, which I would be disappointed if FFXIV's SAM doesn't use Gil Toss (with no actual gil cost ofc) as its generic 'this is a melee character but here's your crappy 150 potency ranged attack in case you wanted it')

If they added NIN, then what's the problem of adding SAM? unless SAM comes from somewhere else than Doma...Since Doma is Japanese style, then it would make perfect sense to add SAM as well
It's silly excuse not to add SAM, just cause of the theme of Heavensward...they say Heavensward has a dark theme...well, what's so bright and happy about SAM?
DRK is tank, SAM is DPS, so why would DRK interfere with adding SAM? from this interview it almost sounds like DRK will be the only job added, since they couldn't add SAM, cause of DRK?
They should totally add SAM in expansion; actually considering Domans already being here, it should already been added, so adding it in expansion, will already be *later*
SAM as DD, is as it should be...it would have been surprising if it was any other way.
I'm a bit sad they are still only on the stage: something to consider for the future...since ppl have been requesting SAM, since they added Jobs...
I'm still reeling with bemusement that they turned Dark Knight, a major DPS job from every single FF game ever, into a tank of all things. It's like giving a White Mage heavy armor and pitting them against a legendary dragon. I would have much preferred a new, unique tank rather than taking a classic job and disemboweling it.
Still, at least Samurai is sounding like the job I expected it to be. It'll be interesting to see what mechanics they'll get to make them unique compared to existing melee jobs.
Now you have to understand that every Final Fantasy is different and things may vary. They keep their dark theme with dark magic, knight armor, skill names(?) even, but what does it make it that DRK has to be >exclusively< a DPS in every FF. Also, only FFXI was an online game. If we followed your argument, there wouldn't be any tank at all in FFXIV, because there aren't tanks in other FF series, you can't have your enemies attack only 1 character of your party while we have the "trinity" in MMOs.I'm still reeling with bemusement that they turned Dark Knight, a major DPS job from every single FF game ever, into a tank of all things. Couldn't agree more. In fact this turns me away from the expansion, I was completely expecting them to go ahead and add samurai as well because... well we need someone to share a similar gear style w/ dragoon. Plus Ninja is already here so it is like, "surely samurai is next!"If they added NIN, then what's the problem of adding SAM? unless SAM comes from somewhere else than Doma...Since Doma is Japanese style, then it would make perfect sense to add SAM as well

If whatever you're shooting doesn't die after you pump 8, 32 caliber, slugs into it, it's probably a dragon.
Well actually they said that ( for the major patch at least) that the japanese names came first, then they used both, it's how they like to do it, I think it's like all languages, we find names in other languages more appealing, I still remember the whines in WoW when they translated the names of most places from english to other languages. You realize the name of the expansion in Japanese is ALSO Heavensward, right? http://jp.finalfantasyxiv.com/heavensward/

But I don't think we can really say that Souten no Ishgard isn't the name of the Expansion, it's the japanese name while Heavensward is the english name, they are both the name ( Yoshi P used a lot Shinsei Eorzea instead of ARR during the Live Letters as an example )
Such happiness. As long as they stick to their guns on this I am very excited since I've been worried about SAM becoming a tank ever since DRK was announced as one. So far my favorite dps jobs in XI (War/Drk/Sam) both ended up being tanks and it was very disappointing to me so I'm happy to see that Sam might end up as a DPS job![]()
