I woulda figured sam to be more of a tank than drk. But this is a different
FF and doesnt have to hold true to past experiences. As long as they make
things both fun and functional, they can continue to explore, expand, and
experiment.

One thing I really hope that SE will one day perform is to successfully make these Stand Alone Jobs have the ability to take up 2 different Job Roles.
A interesting example is to provide SAM with 1 starting attack skill and 2 Battle Stances in level 1 with 1 stance adjusting the SAM Skills to be Tank Skills and the 2nd stance adjusting SAM skills into being DD Skills. Depending on which Stance the SAM is in will determine what effects certain Skills will have and may even adjust some attack animation to reflect the Tank Stance and DD Stance.
Though this is just a example I thought up so don't take it seriously.
FFXI: Ninja (DPS?) - FFXIV: Ninja (DPS)
FFXI: Dark Knight (DPS) - FFXIV: Dark Knight (tank)
FFXI: Samurai (tank?) - FFXIV: Samurai (????)
Samurai is a DPS in XI, they did originally design it at a tank that focused on parrying but they left that on the cutting room floor and had it focus on Weapon Skills (skills that came from the weapon type the weapon you were using).
Ninja is a DPS as well but they can also be used an Avoidance Tank, using evasion and shields to avoid damage. Ninja is also one of the best jobs to use as a sub-job.
FFXI =/= FFXIV it will be nice to remember it...
I was more alluding to the fact that classes that were used one way became the opposing role;Samurai is a DPS in XI, they did originally design it at a tank that focused on parrying but they left that on the cutting room floor and had it focus on Weapon Skills (skills that came from the weapon type the weapon you were using).

Ninja, somehow as a tank => DPS in FFXIV
DRK, dps => tank in FFXIV
SAM, supposed to be tank => (let's hope Naoki follows through) DPS in FFXIV
The Japanese title for the game translates as "The Blue Skies of Ishgard" which, in my opinion, is a much better name than "Heavensward". But I might just be used to the longer names from the FFXI expansions...off-topic but what the heck, Ishgard was in the name of the expansion in JP? Why not in english? I hate when the localization team goes batty and comes up with some random name for things. It ends up sucking bad...no offense to anyone that likes the name, but it just sounds so lazy. sounds like they just asked people to think of any random name they thought sounded cool and put it in a hat to be drawn.
on topic, I guess its cool they may release sam in the future.
I see this has been addressed already, a few times. Mah bad! That's what I get for not reading the whole post and just responding at-will. :P

How about the fact that their major 'trick' is sacrificing HP for extra damage? Yeah... that just screams 'tank' right off the bat doesn't it? Cecil's Darkness skill eats 10% of their HP to double his own attack or deal heavy damage to all enemies, depending if you play the old or new version. If that isn't a DPS skill, then I'm not sure what is. EVERY incarnation of the Dark Knight has this ability so not having it would be just giving the Dark Knight name to another class.
Additionally, there has been equipment for previous Dark Knights which sacrificed your DEFENCE in exchange for OFFENSE. Even the Dissidia 012 job card had this trait. So... tell me again how Dark Knight is supposed to be a tank.
A Tank is one defined as holding the attention of hostile targets so the squishier Party Members can do their job.
The PLD Tanks with a Shield to mitigate damage.
The WAR tanks with his face and uses his anger to shrug off/ignore damage (Thats how i imagine Inner Beast XD)
The DRK could well utilize his sheer destructive force to terrorize his targets into dealing less damage. I could well imagine a DRK Sacrificing 10% his HP to fuel a spell which caused affected targets to deal 30% less damage to the DRK. Theres ways and means to make it work.
