Different games, different roles for some jobs.

Did people complain when the (al)chemist, pure buffer/debuffer in FFV, became a pure healer in FFT, got mixed with the thief in FFX (Rikku), and is now just a discipline of the hand in FFXIV?

I thought this was interesting too. Even in XI, WAR became more or less a DPS class.

Dark Knight's signature ability is Darkness, which consumes their HP to deal damage. Cecil was only a tank after he became a paladin.

Sorry, but no. Cecil as Dark Knight was a tank who had a burst-DPS signature move. The differences stat-wise between Cecil as DRK and Cecil as PLD were minimal. Both ways you used him in the front row so that he'd be attacked more often and take the brunt of the damage, because he was high DEF/MDEF/HP. Minus Darkness, his DPS was poor.

Edit to add: I hope SAM is eventually introduced as a tank, too.

A lot of samurai players wouldn't mind samurais becoming a tank job. I myself included would love to play as a samurai tank.

I'd be extremely disapointed if it was anything apart from tank.

DRK being a tank was one of the best moves they could've done. We already have far more melee DPS than the average raid has melee DPS slots to a point where their balance is a nightmare, and not enough variety for tank players.

I have already amazed players with my Gladiator and Marauder tanking skills at the lowest level dungeons where it's a real challenge to tank exceptionally well.

No it's not, had to burst your bubble there.

Flash spam and riot blade combo, can hold any number of mobs in low level dungeons easily.

Years ago going into XI and seeing that Dark Knight was a DPS, made me upset because all other MMOs I have played had the DRK as a Tank. So, XI was the odd ball on this one. Yoshi P. and his team have been doing a good job thus far. I think they've earned some measure of trust that they will make good quality work of an extremely loved job.

They'll probably make the Gunblade Job a Tank Job as well because of how Garleans with Gunblades always seem to wear Tankish Armor
