i agree...BUT SE embrace and let the players use NiN as a tank instead of nerfing Utsusemi, same way they pretty much made Samurai a dpsLets not start this again - SE never intended NIN to tank in FFXI, that was the lazy player community who made the Job like that - abusing what was meant to originally be simply a 'get-out-of-jail-free-card'. Once Utsusemi went down NINs didn't last long at all if they had hate, showing full well they were not tanks. They were literally paper tigers.
Seriously, people need to get over FFXI. Final Fantasy XI was my first MMO, and I loved it beyond measure. However, this is a totally different game. We're going to keep seeing huge differences between the two games as FFXIV continues to grow.
This is actually what I was thinking in a sense. DRK has a LOT of HP/stat draining moves in some games with them, so we could actually be seeing the rise of a debuff tank.Dark Knight could easily use darkness to tank. The old THM from 1.0 actually had a lot of defensive Dark-based spells, which could see a comeback with Dark Knight. For example:
*Dread Spikes - steals HP from enemies that hit you
*Drain - steals HP from enemies
*Sanguine Rite - Restores MP in proportion to damage taken.
*Absorb ACC/ATK/DEF/EVA - Transfers a portion of the target's accuracy/attack/defense/evasion to you.
*Shadowsear - Deals damage and increases your magic potency in proportion to the different in HP between you and the target.
*Punishing Barbs - Channel your pain to an enemy, redirecting a portion of damage dealt to you back to its source.
*Gravity - Reduces the movement speed of enemies within area of effect.
*Sacrifice - Heals a portion of HP and additional HP over time to party members with area of effect.
*Damnation - Haunt an enemy with visions of the hells, dealing damage. Grants the Caster MP in Proportion of to the damage dealt.
*Blood Rite - Spill your own blood in a sacrificial rite, enhancing magic potency.
*Silhouette - Launch a shadowy attack, dealing damage to the target decreasing enmity. Damage type varies with equipped arm. (would obviously need to be reversed to increase enmity).
*Soul Ward - Allows target to instantaneously revive upon being KO'd.
*Shadowfall - Launch an icy attack, dealing damage and temporarily incapacitating the target.
*Emulate - Imitate the very essence of another, assuming the target's elemental resistances.
*Contagion - Share your anguish, transferring all of your enfeebling effects to the target.
*Mass Fear - Causes enemies within area of effect to flee in terror.
*Stygian Spikes - Deals damage over time and reduces the defense of enemies within area of effect.

Admittedly, the old THM also felt very "Red Mage" as it held a lot of utility spells, but I think Dark Knight could definitely take a cue from it and become a very interesting tank.

FFX doesnt have classes. ¿Anyone doubts Khimari is a Blue Mage? FFVII doesnt have classes. ¿Anyone doubts Cid is a Dragoon? ¿Yuffie is a ninja? ¿Tifa a monk? FFIX doesnt have classes... So Vivi isn`t a black mage then, and Zidane isn`t a thief, kay.Actually, in FFII there were just characters called Dragoons and Dark Knights. Everyone was the same. In fact, Ricard (the Dragoon) didn't even start with any spear proficiencies in FFII.
The Dark Knight in the original FFIII used low level White Magic, had nothing resembling Souleater and wore the tanky gear.
So no, DRK wasn't a DD in FFII (there were no classes), nor was it much of a DD in FFIII either.
You dont have to add a "title" under the character names, FF characters always fit one class archetype more than others by pure correlation of skills/stats/performance. Leon was a DRK, and his best weapon was a spear, shocking.

1 DPS skill is proof of a class being a DPS. Okno, Cyan is one of the best DPS classes and is a Samurai, ok, thats one... In fact, Samurai class actually doesnt fit in neither, DPS or Tank roles, is more of a very balanced class, usually has more evasion than vitality, usually has good DPS but no one near pure DPS classes and also has support skills, even movement skills. And is really uncommon, actually really few characters in FFs fit in the samurai role since it is more a jack-of-all-trades class, Cyan and Auron are both "samurai" and they are very diferent.
FF2: Was somewhat tanky I guess? No particular abilities that suited it.
FF3 DS: Not a tank
FF4:Arguable but I'd say no because if you think they're a tank here then you think Dragoons were tanks as well. Drk/DRG were better at taking hits than the other party members but Paladin was the only true tank imo.

FF11: Not a tank
