I've been following this thread since the start, though I have yet to start work on my own 'bo. I've seen the theory arise that there can be hq 'procs', but I am curious... Has anyone examined time elapsed between the interval of the feeding and the establishment of the new color (through interaction with the stables) as a relevant factor? Most people note '6hrs' but i don't know if that is the true time elapsed, or just a shorthand for "I waited more than the requisite time."
It may be a bit off the wall, but I wonder if it isn't possible that once a change has begun, a chocobo's color can't continue further down a color path until it is 'set'. If true, it could certainly explain some of the variance we are seeing (as opposed to an 'hq' feeding) as I very much doubt everyone is checking their bird at exactly the 6 hour mark.
From what I've read, you cetainly can affect further change to the color after the first message. The thing is the people in this thread (well, some of them) are trying to employ the scientific method to determine the effects of these fruits, and how they behave. That means testing under controlled conditions.
The most reasonable theory I have heard postulates the feather messages following the first one in a given feeding can't be considered reliable indicators. Since usually multiple fruit need to be given before you get the first message in a given session (our present indicator of change) it can be deduced that NOT all fruit cause a change. But my understanding is that all fruit following the first message in a single feeding session will cause the feathers message to repeat. As we already presume that not all fruit cause an effect, it follows that not all of these fruit are causing a change. The message is being repeated as if to say "Hey, that thing that was happening before... it's still happening." So we can't tell any longer which of these fruits are causing a change to happen (though likely some of them are).
Eg. If you give your chocobo 6 fruit, and you get your first feathers message on the second, it is my understanding you will always get a message on fruits 3, 4, 5 & 6. However, since it seems to be somewhat random if any one fruit has an effect, you could have either changed colors on the 2nd, 4th, and 5th fruits OR the 2nd, and 6th fruits etc. for a total range of 1-5 changes. This makes for a very poor means of experimentation as well as arriving at a specific color reliably.
