Yeah, I'm thinking it picks the color that is closest, on average, to the red, green, and blue values your chocobo is set to. Personally my color transitions went start -> slate grey -> Russet Brown -> Wine Red -> Dalamud Red -> Chestnut Brown -> Kobold Brown -> Soot Black.

Can I ask - in what order did you give the fruit to your chocobo during your first feeding to achieve Slate Grey? I followed the same "recipe" over two feedings - first did 12 O'ghomoro Berries, which did give me Goobbue Gray as I was expecting, and then in the second feeding gave it the remaining O'ghomoro Berries, followed by Pears, followed by Apples. This resulted in Plum Purple, not Slate Gray. I've given it a bit of lighten red overnight to see if that helps matters, but I'm not expecting magic.

So during your first feeding, what order did you give the 3 types of fruit?
