The sad thing is that the developers made the exact same mistake at the end of Cataclysm with the Dragon Soul raid and the release of MOP stretching for 1 year. Seems they never learn their mistakes.

I know I will probably catch all kinds of hell for this, but I was really impressed with the Warlords cinematic, it happens everytime, Blizzard can build hype like no one else. It helps having so much lore to build on, but I enjoyed the WoW storylines much more than XIV, not saying this was bad, but by the time I got to the Lich King, Nefarion, Ragnaros all of them, I didn't want to just kill them for the loot, I wanted to see them dead, in XIV it's sort of like ok, we killed him, now what. I like the little patches they do with XIV, but it makes you wonder if it's stuff they have ready to go with a major patch, and just hold onto it so they can keep their frequent updates up. WoW's stuff might not be as frequent, but their patches are pretty big when they do them, their stuff is tested, and they continually adjust for balance. If anything that is what I would want to see XIV take from WoW, test your content, open a test server, don't keep tossing out content that seems broken for a month or so until the next little patch when you decide to fix it and treat it like it's fresh content.

I have the same thing happen with every new expansion.. I see the cinematic, figure I should maybe look into the expansion, get interested by something and end up subscribing... Only to unsubscribe almost immediately again because I still can't stand the actual in-game graphics (not because they're old or bad, I just don't like the art style) ..

I have to say though, I really liked the whole story and tutorial quests of the Worgen, that was really well done.

No. ARR and WoW compete for some of the same players but they are very different games in some respects. ARR isn't a raiding game really. I've said this many time, it's not what a WoW player would call hardcore and neither is the PvP. WoW caters to a broad range of players from 'casual loggers to the high end have-no-life-a-week-when-a-new-tier-is-released raiders. This is not ARR and those people wouldn't be satisfied here.

Many MMOs in the last few years have tried to emulate WoW and have failed seriously. SWTOR, in place of dragons they have droids but very similar to WoW. They went quasi-free-to-play. Trion marketed Rift as a hardcore WoW. They even used the infamous slogan you're not in Azeroth anymore - yeah, we know and went back to Azeroth. Now they went free to play and reply on rehashes and lottery boxes. Recently Wildstar released and apparently they were founded by former WoW devs. They too went with the hardcore tag but guess what, they picked the worst features of WoW. 40 man raids, attunement chain and the so-called hardcore raids. They're only realising how big a mistake they made now. A few months on and the few servers are felling empty. They just nerfed the raid attunement chain.

After the disaster of 1.0 SE have been cautious with what they do, too cautious but that's my opinion. Most MMO launches go boom and then sharply bust. ARR seems to be stabilising and possibly growing their player base. Just leave it as it is. If vacationing WoW players gravitate to us then let them but don't court them.

lol same here. I saw the cinematic for WoD yesterday and it seriously got me pumped to play it ... but no! I had to snap myself out of it. I refuse! Once youre done with the cinematics youre right back to the same crap its been since WotLK. Made that mistake with MoP and didnt play more than 3 months.

Yeah the overly complicated attunement stuff was the final straw for me and that game. There was just so much superfluous nonsense, not to mention how much of it was broken since freakin beta! Still I hope they come out of that slum. They made mistakes, and are taking their sweet time fixing it, but id hate to see them go F2P as well.

ESO seems to be picking up lately as well.

I agree with this. I love ARR but Wow from vanilla to pre cata will always be my fav mmo. The 40 man AQ and Zulgurub dungeons in vanilla, to kara, zul'aman and sunwell in bc, up to Arthas in Wotlk all had a real rich backstory to it. The quests were really well done and Azeroth was a real rich open world without any invisible walls. The fights were punishing but rewarding and much less scripted and team jump rope like in ARR. Open world pvp was fun and the 72 man bg in wotlk, wintergrasp is much more well done than frontlines IMO. Sadly, they screwed it up in cataclysm and beyond with all the homogenization and nerfs. I'll go back to wow in a heartbeat if they could change some of these.

Heh we seem to be on the same page. Was subbed for 1 month and when I got to 50, the attunement was almost impossible to complete, not because of the difficulty, but the strict no mistakes allowed timer to get silver to get attuned. Add to that the multiple bugs that occured in the dungeons sometimes causing a key npc not to spawn and ruining the last 2 hours of your play cause of a bug. That was the last straw for me.

Regarding WoD, they said they are trying to go back to BC and Wotlk roots which was really where the game was in its prime imo. I'll give it a few weeks, if reviews are positive and the difficulty goes back to pre wrath babies, I might consider going back.

Even if they do go back to old roots I don't think I'd go back for one reason. They cater towards players. The reason they say the are going back to BC and WoTLK roots is because they are trying to cater the players. Players want WoTLK/TBC/Vanilla roots, they drop everything and go that way. Meaning if the player base prefers the current WoW after the release, it will happen all over again of Cataclysm and Mists of Pandaria style.

The only game I will buy in the future from them is SC2, hopefully the last part of the current story line. Also depending on how they make the next diablo, I may consider it, maybe.

ESO has a very different player-base, it's not direct competence, and i'm sure those numbers are just an occasional peak or the number of registered accounts (not subscribed), i have played it, and it's a disgrace for the MMO genre and the franchise... but you can be a vampire or a werewolf, guess the twilight fan base will keep it alive and p2p.

And ffxiv is at 2m+, well, that's what SE says.
