With the announcement of the new WoW expansion release date, many players are unsubscribing, mostly because it has been over a year since the last content update and they now have to wait ANOTHER 3 months.

Now would be a good time to advertise just how often content is added here, just saying.

Which also explains why XIV ARR actually did pretty well, that's one thing that worked in its favor.

I know this is just bait, but credit where it's due. WoW has been bleeding subscribers for years, long before the drought. XIV got and kept it's subscribers through it's own merits.

One MMO losing subs + a newly released MMO does experience a quicker growth than if everyone is perfectly happy with the MMO they're playing, especially 2 P2P ones. This has been true since pretty much the start of MMOs. So it's a bit silly to say people losing interest in WoW and looking for a new MMO didn't help ARR in any way.

To be fair, subscription numbers are dropping for FFXIV:ARR, but they were temporarily hidden behind a wave of ps4 players entering the game. It hasn't so much stabilized as had releases on three different systems. Essentially FFXIV is living (at the moment) off of grab-bagging whoever they can to come play the game.

That being said, yes, FFXIV: ARR is one of the more successful MMORPGs to come out for a while, but only in terms of financial stability. It isn't doing anything particularly new or interesting gameplay wise, so I don't know how they plan to make it last in a market where the vast majority of players have grown tired of the norm.

It was Cataclysm that was the nail in the coffin for me. Wrath dug the grave though.
