I also didn't catch how long you guys have known each other, or if things could possibly be worked out...because that would be the deciding factor in me cancelling the account entirely. Its a real shame it tore your FC apart, you don't deserve that Elhorn. You're seriously one of the nicest people I've met in the game. Really though, stop paying for it right away. If they can't pay the sub, well that's on them. Personally, I'd feel incredibly guilty letting someone else pay my sub.

If this is something that caused a rift in the friendship, perhaps it is time to reconsider the friendship. I don't really see any conflict as far as the account goes, it is your account and you can do whatever you want with it. It was nice of you to buy and pay for a sub for him to enjoy the game. Based on what you've said it sounds like he did put some time into the game so to be fair, maybe you can offer to transfer whatever items/gils that are transferable if your friend wishes to continue the game on another account. I've seen so many cases in MMO where people held onto an old friendship simply because he has known this friend for X number of years. All of them have been abandoned by their so called "old friend" and also lost the opportunity to make new ones simply because they are a burden just by association to these selfish friends.

Anyway, just stop paying for the account. Whether you wish to keep it for yourself or give it to the person is up to you. Seeing how bad it got though, I wouldn't even give them that.

beyond that, i cannot fathom why anyone would pay for someone else's sub.
but if i was 18 again and wanted to pay for a friend because i had no
understanding of the potential outcomes paying for other people's things could lead to,
then i would cancel the sub and hope he could contact SE and recover his character under his own account.
if not, oh well...!?!?
