    If this is something that caused a rift in the friendship, perhaps it is time to reconsider the friendship. I don't really see any conflict as far as the account goes, it is your account and you can do whatever you want with it. It was nice of you to buy and pay for a sub for him to enjoy the game. Based on what you've said it sounds like he did put some time into the game so to be fair, maybe you can offer to transfer whatever items/gils that are transferable if your friend wishes to continue the game on another account. I've seen so many cases in MMO where people held onto an old friendship simply because he has known this friend for X number of years. All of them have been abandoned by their so called "old friend" and also lost the opportunity to make new ones simply because they are a burden just by association to these selfish friends.
