When to use Flare?

Is your mana really low and you don't have swiftcast up? Might as well flare!

No more enemies? No need to AOE? No problem, it's time to flare!

Full Limit Gauge? Flare x Meteor 2x sick combo!

In short, my protip for black mage: is it blowing up? If no, blow it up. If yes, blow it up harder!

very much agreed. Will also say at all cost try to avoid to flare after a transpose.
As you do larger group of enemies you can then be doing triple flares

I once do a combo of 7 Flares. Initial, convert, transpose (got 2), X ether, transpose (got 2)

I got lucky and my MP regenerated precisely after the Flare empties my MP, happened twice. Felt glorious

After you transpose (with a swiftcast) wait two secs, literally two seconds, cast flare, you will get a tic, cast it again, oh and transpose is almost up again ^^

More than one mob? >> Use Flare
Need to end a boss fight or mob pull? >> Use Flare
Wanna blow something up? >> Use Flare
Wanna F*ck with the tank? >> Use Flare at start
Do you have to pee? >> Use FLARE

I guess the question is, when do you not use flare?

Really, though, it should be a part of your rotation when you need to push through a DPS phase, end fights quicker, speedrun, etc. If you have the mana for it use it. With fire spam, how often do you push the convert and transpose buttons? To go from astral ice to astral fire to get a small bonus on your Fire III? I use them more often now than I did. But that's...

I actually very rarely use Flare, unless it's for AoE mobbing. IDK, it feels like casting Fire multiple times is better than Flare, since you need to convert or wait for transpose to take effect. Anyone ever calculated the numbers?

ACTUALLY, don't use flare until you're ABSOLUTELY sure that your tank has established enough hate on the mobs, or else you're gonna wind up tanking. That Burst damage generates a HUGE amount of hate.

Being a DPS main who enjoys playing each DPS job at full capacity, I have theorycrafted/tested/researched each one of them.

Show us the figures then. I'm sure every DPS community would like to see these.

My testing is not exclusive to dummies. That would be silly. They have their place, and provide conclusions in a certain context.

More relevant testing is content like Turn 4 of BCoB or Brayflox (Hard) speed runs.

You can either try it out, and realize like the rest of us that Fire II - based AoE rotations have been very much subpar AoE DPS compared to what you could have been doing, or continue to be stubborn. Your call.

Lots of people doing the same thing does not mean it's superior to methods used by the few.

Any BLM that would like to play their job optimally is encouraged to learn this, and love it, as I said earlier.

After reading this I decided to test it out on dummies. I got the timing down very quickly and the timing is very forgiving. And when you get the instant mana tick on Transpose those Flares are right on top of each other.

Fire III > Flare > Transpose *Wait 2 seconds* > Flare > Flare > Transpose *Wait 2 seconds......

Basically right after the mana tick of Transpose you count: "One Mississippi, TWO" and cast Flare ON the 2 (not after). After 5 minutes I was nailing it every single time.

I used Party Finder to do some Brayflox HM Soldiery runs and I was burning mobs down obscenely fast. And when you have Convert and Swiftcast you can do Triple Flares without the use of an item:

Fire III > Flare > Transpose *Wait 2 seconds* > Flare > Flare > Convert > Swiftcast Flare > Transpose *Wait 2 seconds*....

This is my new AoE rotation. Flares all day.
