What is so hard about easing up on the throttle and reduce your own DPS? Use it as an opportunity to spirit bond a piece or two for crying out loud. Or better yet help an undergeared noob on the DF or your own FC?

But NO!!! We haz all this yarn so we must strangle ourselfz!!!

Not sure if serious. In case of serious, the general goal of an MMORPG is to get stronger. In this game your are penalized for getting stronger. "Don't get stronger because other people are not stronger yet go help them" uhm, no. I will impede my progress and pass on some loot to help a friend or a stranger in need but I should not have to be capped sub par to the top to play the game properly.

No I have not miss the main point. More DPS is not stronger. Better loot and better gear is not being stronger. Playing well with other people is getting stronger, being able to overcome obstacles is getting stronger. Being more flexible about your play style is getting stronger. This is curve ball, it requires a different approach is all.

Save DPS for when you need and when it is appropriate. Learn some control.

There should never be a point where it says "look, I know you worked very hard to get I110. But sorry, if you use that gear and play your class right your gonna lose fights. No. I want to use my hard earned gear to do better damage. To kill a boss faster. To save me time. Not to have a boss kill me because of that.

Obviously you didn't use it right. Use that gear ease up on the throttle for a cycle or two. Is that hard to not press the keys/buttons? It is so tempting so hard to resist. Must press..... then BOOM!!!

Better gear for more DPS is quite literally fits into the literal definition of "stronger". By all means go into Coil/Second Coil/EX Primals in a party full of AF and pink accessories and see how "strong" you are overcoming any obstacle.
Doesn't matter how well you play together when your tank can't even survive a 2 stack MB, let alone survive a tail whip in T7.
Doesn't matter how well you play together when your dps isn't STRONG enough to kill the boss before an enrage timer.
Doesn't matter how well you play together when 1100HP Cure II 's can't keep up with the 1300 damage auto attacks, let alone special attacks.

    Stronger gear = Stronger player.

Yeah, this game doesn't scale well with iLevel. Part of it is gear progression is being pushed waaaaaaay to fast. Another part is I think the devs are (hopefully) learning as they go about how to better balance fights.

I think you all are missing Foo's point. Yes, get the gear, be your best, but realize that this game isn't a fighting game where the only key to victory is pulling off that 80 hit juggle combo before your opponent does. This is an MMO where being a team player is more important than your kill score. If you're overgeared for a fight then relax, give it as much effort as needed and, I don't know, socialize. I do that pretty often when I get the chance, it's fun to talk to people that you might never meet again. See what keeps them playing. Or try out something new, see if you can get a better way of playing. The point is it doesn't have to be all damage all the time. Even Yoshida sees this, incorporating into recent updates mechanics for punishing balls-to-the-wall DDs. Admittedly, he went the "dev route" on it, and that route never ends well...

But this is exactly what we are talking about. The game penalizes you in all the wrong ways for doing large damage.

Easing up on the DPS is actually well established fact in this game. Do you go all out on DPS and pull the mobs off the newbie tank in say a level-synced dungeon like Tam-tara? Well then what is all that DPS good for? Apply it correctly at the right times is all that is required. Learn some self control. Improve your character as in your own character of your own real life self. Learn a bit of patience, improve those patience stats it will help.

I main is an SMN, but having leveled a PLD, you really learn just how clueless DPS can be sometimes, including myself among said DPS players. And the DPS are whining here because they just want to be more clueless.
