    High DPS: What's the point?

So my group has been through all of coil, we have 2 and this week will be our 3rd T9 win. We are getting significantly geared up. As this happens though, it begs the question: why?

In so many fights you are flat out punished for big DPS. T5 can push through conflags to quickly, resulting in fireball on people. Ifrit EX push him fast enough and he enrages and kills you. Same with Leviathan. Turn 7, DPS fast enough and timings go wacko resulting in screwed up Renauds / Voice timing. I'm sure there are other instances to but I'm not thinking of them at the moment.

Anyways, I understand SE wants the fights to be executed in the correct manner. But we already have obviously done this. Why add inconvenience and annoyance to being geared up afterwards? Obviously you can slow DPS or wait for things. But the point is when you are powerful, you want to smash things you once were not be able to. Not make the fights turn against you.

    What are your views?

So when new and harder content gets released you don't say "we don't have enough dps" ;]

I think they need to get rid of HP based mechanics (but leave phase changes to HP checkpoints) and make it so phase changes happen after a mechanic not during... This whole HP based mechanic is horrid.

this is just sloppy poor rushed design. pure and simple.
they didnt think any of it through and it shows when you see these half baked encounters get broken so easily by miniscule increases in gear ilv and dps. levi ex, titan ex, t5-6-7-8 they just slapped all this inflated gear into the game without rebalancing anything. now also stop and think what is going to happen when coil2 is nerfed and echo15% is introduced on top of the better gear even further increasing the group performance that everybodys gonna have due to sands/oils in ct and so on. t6-t7-t8 phase pushes are going to mess everything up even more than now haha.
you are right in that you say "why are we running this?". at this point its just for prestige and bragging rights really.
i dont think i have ever seen an mmo where better geared groups are punished so harshly.

the solution is very simple. major boss moves and add spawns that are capable of breaking encounters need to be on global timers.

Think first game ive heard at least where you have to actually hold back you dps thats very counterproductive to your jobs role imo.

Adjusting to high DPS is simple. You ask why, I ask why not? I think it's awesome to go back and think "whoa! We're melting this!"

I will admit: Leviathan became more enjoyable when mobs would spawn when they normaly wouldn't adding something new and actual fun elements to the fight.

I don't care for the DPS restrictions on your Ifrit/Leviathan examples and agree with you entirely there. However, your T5/7 examples are not the same in my opinion. If you're killing conflags before Twin uses fireball, that just means your group should be spending an extra GCD or two on Twin before popping the conflag instead. And for T7 it's not directly a punishment for high DPS. You can get bad timings just as easily with poor DPS as you can with high.

I get what you mean just saying like random stuff I could think of. Yeah Turn 7 low DPS can provide the same problems, what I'm getting at is more of the people who can destroy the fights getting like double petrifaction and not getting a voice stuff like that.

I think the way they did Pharos first boss is a more correct way to make a group consider DPS. Where adds are spawned at certain %'s and with higher gear they can come relatively quickly. It is atleast giving the group a choice in how they want to consider their DPS. Overgear without consideration to halting DPS and you may possibly be overrun. Overgear some more and you may have the choice to burn through with the chance to plow through it. Either way, it still leaves the group with a choice in if they want to push DPS. The insta kill at hitting a threshold at an undesired period designated by the devs is lazy in my opinion.
