Oddly enough the only MMO system that I can think of that has ever done rare equipment right is WoW's arena system.

I know I know, but hear me out.

Before WoW's arena all rare items have always been acquired by time or gold. I can't for the life of me think of a worse way to distribute rare gear then how much free time players have or how much real money they can hand out to RMT.

What arena did (for those that don't know) is cap the amount of items obtainable by only handing them out to a very small minority that actually performed better then everyone else. All though the system had problems and most of us felt like the requirements were to low, the idea behind the system is gold.

If people want truly rare items in the game i suggest that SE finds a system that is similar and makes it work in a PvE environment. For instance, make a currency that is only obtainable by the top 1% or so that completes group tasks faster/better/whatever then the rest of the population.

    Example:
Dungeon A drops decent loot or materials upon completion but the 1% percent of teams that complete Dungeon A in the shortest time or with the highest completion rate get special currency they can build up and eventually buy Relic gear or what have you.

A system that has a large time sink, skill based and rewards hardcore players with cool gears.

But I mean they could easily make two axes, or an axe for each job that gets put MRD. So once they figure out how to divide them up by the stats that will go on them, I totally support this idea.

I would love it if they went the way of nyzul mythic weapons and left out the currency. Weapons that are obtainable through many quests/achievements are fine with me, but I hate dealing with the gil aspect.
Good points, I have changed the currency idea as I think it should be rare/ex now so it could not be sold or traded as that way it would be fair and square with who it lands on and even if you had deep pockets you would not be able to buy your way to obtaining one.

I purposely did say to implement after the Job system so that the weapons would be for the role of that Job as that is what the Job system is for. Having said that maybe they could take a direction like the Magian Weapons that you could build and place stats in a variety of ways to make the perfect weapons for yourself and the role you want to play.

Finally yes Nyzul Isle was the perfect thing for me as it was a challenge but I could make a bit of progress anytime I liked (as long as I could find some people to come along ^^) I think in the OP I was to busy thinking of a Dynamis style Relic and completely forgot other forms that were comparable.

it still had a fairly large gil requirement 30,000 crystals or something, thats what, 90 mill?

Yea it did, what i meant my post to sound like was to go the way of nyzul mythic weapons and "additionally" leave out the currency if that makes more sense

Edited the first post to make it sound clearer

I think the currency aspect is needed though to make them rare which is the whole point. Now if they took the Nyzul Isle approach to unlocking the base weapon which would still be good and accessible to more players and then used a form of Currency to upgrade it to kind of a +1 version that would be ok. Like I said though if they make the currency rare/ex so LS leaders can't exploit there fellow members it would cut all that crap out.

They could even make the Currency drop out of the endgame dungeon as well to maybe off of Beastmen so if you fight them in the field, in a dungeon, where ever you still have chance of some dropping and with how the drop system works in FFXIV once it goes to a Player it stays with the Player.

Like I said in the beginning the whole point is to make the final form very rare, maybe it would take a hardcore player a year and a casual player 3 years but as long as the currency just dropped randomly from different sources you could make that bit of progress any time and anywhere, without having to solely focus on it and over time you would get there eventually.

Problem with this is the same thing you see in WoW will happen here, people will sell their rankings to others so that they can get the gears. My arena group made thousands of gold doing this.

First of all, yes. I would love to see relic weapons make an appearance in FFXIV. I can't imagine an FF game without ultimate weapons. However, there's one part I strongly disagree with.

This is absolutely false. For most of my relic wielding friends and myself included, exploiting others was NOT how we obtained them. I, just like most others, worked my ass off for them. I went the route of farming with my brother for months to amass all the gil needed to purchase currency. Not once did I ever "exploit" any other player to progress further with the quests.

Overall, the amount of currency that I actually got through Dynamis runs was maybe 2%. The rest I bought mostly from shouting in Whitegate.

If SE implements them the same way they did with relics or even mythics (needing currency/alexandrite/whatever,) then making them (the currency) rare/ex will be a huge mistake. All it would do is force people to exploit others, the exact opposite of what you want. The only way you'd be able to obtain them is through events. For someone to ever amass enough currency to complete them they would have to take all the currency drops in countless Raid/Dungeon runs. In FFXI it could take up to 2 years of biweekly Dynamis runs for enough currency for 1 relic, and that's if ALL of the currency went to 1 person.

Buying/selling currency is not exploiting others. Creating BS endgame rules like "So and so is getting all of the currency drops from this run" is. Sure, people did it in FFXI. But the majority of relic holders that I knew did not. Making the currecy rare/ex is only asking for exploitation and is a very bad decision if you ask me.

    Edit:

This is total BS, too. Anyone that bought their currency will tell you that it took MUCH longer than getting the gil for it. Why post about things you obviously knew nothing about?

Well I will agree and applaud your idea for relic type weapon.

But I will have to disagree on the need for currency at all. I just feel currency is a redundant thing needed, and something more engaging could be used in its place.
<---- rethought this, its ok.... But still could be something else

EDIT: actually you know what I might be able to do the RA/EX thing. I just need to think about it from another point of view. Such as getting tokens from nyzul. they are RA/EX (in the means that others can't take yours) and come from achieving a goal of saving floors.

I do not think making the Currency rare/ex would be bad if you look at my idea's a few posts up, there may be something I have overlooked though so if there is please point it out. I know that not everyone would exploit players to gain what they need but their is always the bad egg's that will do just that. With how the drop system works in FFXIV that could not happen if they put it straight into your Currency inventory when it dropped.

I think it is great that you managed to achieve what you did and that is the point of these weapons they should require a lot of hard work and time for the final form.

I just hope if they add relics that they are more varied or there are more than one per weapon type right of the bat.

I'd also like the difficulty to be not as easy as empryians but not as hard mythics. If that makes sense. Maybe 3-4 month projects instead of year projects.
