I'm fairly certain that if this were a proper time-sink, and SE said "you'll be spending the next 2 months on this", AND you'd see some bloody progression, nobody would be complaining on the forums in the first place!
Which is not a requisite to incorpore good old mechanics like low % based drops. And it to be random is the best thing of the whole system. Luck is something people need to progress, there is no progress without having good luck, hard work or genius aren`t everything, if you want something, you always need luck. And thats perfect. If someone gets it in 12 hours, fine, if someone doesn`t get it in 1 year, fine too.

The only bad thing about atmas is that you can`t trade-sell em, that would be even better.

And the last part is just naive. Everyone would complain if for example, instead of atma drops, there was "bars" that needs to be filled by killing monsters on the FATEs, lets say, 1.000 kills per map. You will have the exact same ammout of QQ all over the place. 1.000? make it 100 and it would be all the same. And easier than that, the other part of the forums would begin his own QQ on how atmas are easier to get and make their hardworked allagan, levitahan EX, weekly EX, high allagan weapons useless.

ATMA system is perfect like it is now. The only ones turning it into a booring mindless grind are players themselves, having so much to do, dedicate more than 1 hour a day for such a booring activite is stupid. And if it didn`t drop in the first 60 minutes, it will not drop at the minute 61. In other words, lrn2mmorpg.
