I was about to come in here and complain about WoW players trying to change the meaning of words to what they think they should be, but I see enough people have commented to that effect.

As mentioned in one of the earlier posts in this thread, a raid is something that can be undertaken by a minimum of 1 person and is not defined by numbers.

Please, no more stupid comments like "OMG, the dictionary has changed the meaning of a word I use in WoW! WoW was here before the english language and therefore must take priority!". Seriously, sometimes I hear people use words in games and think they just pulled a word out of their arse and decided to give it a new meaning to suit whatever they want it to mean.

I mostly gave up on most misuses when people typed "LOL" and didn't actually laugh out loud. Sitting next to them in a computer cafe or on the phone with them, I believe I would have heard something.

When someone types in Roflcopter, I want to see someone jump out of their chair and git to it!!!

On the "raid" thing, it's been around since '98 with Everquest, going on to Dark Age of Camelot. FFXI called it an Alliance I think. MMO conceptually, these words encompass "a group/party so large, one group/party can't contain all the love".

In the FF14 sense: Four people most likely make up a single party. Where eight people wouldbe the equivalent of two parties. The fifteen person J-Pop groups may be making a return when they figure out how far eight people can go.

Just throwing my two gil/copper pieces/meseta out there.

I will agree with most here and chime in to say that this really doesn't bother me. Even in World of Warcraft there are 10 player "raids". That doesn't seem significantly large to me. If SE want's to use it in this way, I don't see why they shouldn't, especially when most MMOs take words and give them a new meaning. Relinquishing the use of a particular word just to meet the status quo seems a little odd especially in a fantasy game.

haha, I just have to quote this because it's the funniest thing I've seen someone say while still being serious. Sorry Yoshi-P, Rowyne thinks you're cloning WoW wrong.

So, just so we're clear, Yoshi-P is using the word the way it is supposed to be used. WoW people have a different understanding of the word and think that the way it is supposed to be used is wrong. I do think this is the winner of 'Epic Thread of the Month - June 2011'

NEws flash WoW didn't invent raids. It's a general mmo term it means doing something with a group in an area. That's about as much as I can say without being inaccurate. Raid is just as eclectic a term across different mmos as grinding, farming, or pvp it means many different things in many different games get used to it you're gonna have to adjust.

no one cares about world of warcraft.. it was a crap game aimed at retards. It may do you some good if you invest in a dictionary

RAID is not about having 2563546363 players in 1 dungeon RAID by definition is

"a sudden attack behind an enemy's lines without the intention of holding ground"

so 2 person can Raid. YP is not missusing the word OP, its just you are ignorant and think the word raid came from WoW and MMOs

I don't want him to use the word at all. I don't want any dungeons without unique mechanics and names period.

Made up in game terminology? Raid is a word that existed long before MMO's, long before video games, long before electricity. It is not a "made up in game term" by any stretch of the imagination.
