Did it ever occur to you that
    のレ イド
    and
    RAID
mean different things to different groups?

By our standards we look at Western MMOs and say "Okay, it's when a large group of people join up and do a dungeon."
When they look at it, they see Western MMOs using the word raid as an instanced dungeon.

They're both correct. Who cares if it's 5 people doing the instance or 40 people, it's an instanced dungeon. Just accept the term the way they use it. There are so many bigger issues at hand.

EDIT: and to be fair, there really ISN'T a great word for just a 5 man group dungeon besides 'dungeon,' which is incredibly generic and can also be applied to a 10 man group or larger.

This definitely feels strange to use the word raid for a mundane group-sized instance.

It's a thing to refer standard features in non-standard ways (guilds or chat channels as ls, public quests as behest, dailies-on-a-36h-timer as leves, aggro as innimity, etc.), its another to use a standard word for something else. This creates unneeded confusion.

Why couldn't they make their own word, since they are so good in renaming features?

Heh, cuz one thing is, the Japanese language can be seen by going near definitions.

A sudden attack on an enemy by troops, aircraft, or other armed forces in warfare

    - a bombing raid

A surprise attack to commit a crime, esp. to steal from business premises
    - an early morning raid on a bank

A surprise visit by police to arrest suspected people or seize illicit goods
Notice by definition, a raid is merely "an attack" of some kind. It is primiarly a western thing that raid = "We need 829 people to go through this dungeon!"

So there's no real confusion, just the fact people think there's only 1 way to describe things and that's the "correct" way.

I don't really care one way or the other, but I will say in FFXI I never called anything a raid. All endgame content was either called Endgame in general or reffered to by its specific name (i.e. Salvage, Limbus, etc.). So I will likely just call it Endgame content for the high level dungeon and Mid-range content for the low level dungeon or whatever their names are or even just an acronym like SoF, AN, DM, etc.

On another note, I love low-man content so I'd be happy with all endgame mechanics revolving around 4 or 8 man parties. And while I would like some large-scale PvE, I hope they limit it to Campaign style content (dare I hope even something approaching GW2 dynamic content?).

To echo what some have said in other threads and in this thread...

SE should give these new R25+ and R45+ events specific names with lore backing the name. SE should then be refering to these events by their specific names. Calling them "Raid" and "Dungeon", especially by the producer of the game, is far too generic and -lazy-. It shows that the FFXIV team is just pumping out some fighting content and hasnt built any depth or story into the new events. This is a MMO -Role Playing Game- isnt it?

If we are going to be using generic terms for things.. why bother giving the cities names.. maybe we should rename the cities:

    Populated Urban Area 1
    Populated Urban Area 2
    ... etc

This would make it very easy to add new cities. The development team wouldnt even need to come up with new names for cities in the future. And this can extend to every aspect of the game.

    Gladiator Sword Ability 1
    Gladiator Sword Ability 2
    ... etc

What happens when SE adds another R45+ "Raid"... what will they call it... R45 Raid No. 2?

Bah. Anyway... Dev. Team... Toss the generic crap and start making an interesting Final Fantasy game.

When nitpicking over choices of words, especially ones that are made up in game terminology.. how it is NOT nerd rage is beyond me.
