The thing is, you guys need to stop pretending that FFXIV with "Open World" mechanics would be the same game. There is a reason those mechanics don't exist, and it's because they've been replaced with something else. There's also a reason you miss them, and thats because they offer an experience different than the one FFXIV is trying to give you.
Instanced dungeons = lockout by design. You gain your items by completing content, and the only RNG that stops you is the roulette of which piece drops, which is also mitigated by Tome acquisition -- there is no traditional drop rate. The theme here is forward progress with playtime.
Open World MMOs = lockout by respawn rates and drop %. You gain items by repeated defeat of enemies that drop your item. You gain what you want by getting lucky. Biggest determining factor other than pure RNG is your combined number of roles, I.E. playtime counter. The theme here is repetition.
They are not the same, and adding in the mechanics of one over the other (that drop gear everyone will want) is just pure and simple bad game design. They will compete with one another.
...congratulations? Why don't you just make the switch permanent? Nobody is forcing you to pay to play this, and if you can spend your money elsewhere then what on earth is stopping you.
Look, Square isn't going to suddenly turn this game into Final Fantasy 11. It just isn't going to happen. This game is the way it is because the design team doesn't care for open-world MMO antics, something i IMMEDIATELY noticed when I started playing XIV, and is currently the only reason im still subscribed. It's clear the game is catering more to people like me, and not you.
So i'd honestly suggest you just save the frustration and quit. I'm not even kidding. I've played my fair share of MMOs, and if you are annoyed with the general design path of the game, you're eventually just going to hate it anyway. It isn't going to change.
