Their choice was 1% drop rates on items no lockout, or lockouts where you get 2 random items from each bosses loot table then are locked out for the week.

The 1% drop rate appeals to the no-lifers because they will run whatever zone like 20 hours a day, essentially getting all the drops by brute forcing it. This leaves a player can only play a couple of hours a week in the dust because they can't run the same zone over and over again due to play time issues.

Weekly lookout puts no-lifers and casual players on the same playing field. A majority of people are happy with it in the end.

I only have a couple problems with this:

    1. I don't want to run something a potential 20 times (or less, or more) per week (for one Turn out of four even) for the one item I'm after, let alone for 7 other people. The latter scenario leading to:

    2. Making it to where you can repeat content ad nauseam will turn Coil into something you PUG instead of something you run with your FC or a close knit group. Maybe this isn't a problem for some, but I don't particularly want to play with random people all the time, especially if the sample size is taken from some of the Ex PF groups I've been in...

Yes, but this is going to have no bearing on T6-9. New content will still work under lockouts to make it so people don't blitz through it so fast that they completely run out of stuff to do.

The problem is, there is no actual way to make up for the time difference different players can put into the game. Regardless of lockouts, players who can put more time into the game will outpace those who cannot. How many players are walking around in full allagan by this point? Not that many.

Also, raid lockouts do not allow for players with different time constraints to enjoy the content communally because they live in different worlds. One group dedicates hours of their day to downing a boss while the other can only spend maybe an hour max on a given encounter. That will generate such a huge gap in skill between the two groups that they will always diverge within a few weeks of new content being released. This is why people are at each others throats all the time on fights like Titan Extreme, but when it was first released few people cared whether you died repeatedly.

There are solutions to these problems, but they require a very different kind of end game design than what is currently being worked on and implemented. The development team needs to look at games that have high levels of replayability outside of the MMORPG genre and figure out how to incorporate story appropriate versions of one or more of those game types into FFXIV:ARR. Otherwise we're just going to be dealing with the same frustration we always are in these sorts of games.

CT model is much better for me too.

With this model I can try to get useful loot as many times as I can, though I still can't gear too fast (1 piece for week). Today I made coil run, got nothing, and that's all, have to wait for next week.
And more importantly - with this model I can make a run even if I already had loot, just to help other people. I can't even repeat coil run (just for practice, for example) if I already done it this week.

CT model is better for everybody, but worse for the game itself. That's the point. Yoshi-P said it as clear as can be said. It should be obvious once you start to look at the big picture instead of personal inconveniences.

Something needs to be done. I've built and rebuilt and keep rebuilding friendships and groups. But the result is always the same; they quit. No matter how hard core, how close of a friend, or how dedicated they are - they end up quitting despite my attempts to keep them enthusiastic and motivated to play.

Today a friend logged on after 2 months of missing in action and said "well at least you still haven't quit, I would be shocked if you of all people ever did".

But I'm getting there. I'm being pushed there. And then I ask myself, should it be this hard to enjoy the game? I'm a hypocrite, I myself am not happy but keep beating the drums to go on. It dawns on me, like an epiphany sent down by an angel from God, "go on to what?"

    More of "this"?

    I don't think I will.

Having lockouts is a crafty business decision than the thinly veiled purpose of leveling the field for drops for all kinds of players. Want to finish the game? Lets stretch what you can actually accomplish in a day/week to a month. Subscriptions are more or less controlled. No amount of effort on our part will hasten our chances to complete gear sets, get bored quickly or thought of profiteering by selling runs once finished if we are all placed in a time based control like the weekly lockouts. But what about the people who has seen through all of this or just doesnt care and thought of quitting? Give them hope with the promise of eventually letting go of this lockouts like the one coming in 2.2 for turns 1-5. Label it as catering to both casual and hardcore players and you got a business going. Im not complaining, im currently enjoying this game at my own pace, its just that it is what it is.

So they locked us out of the content and give us nothing to do?

I think one of the reason why coil has such a lock out is because they want to make it some form of recognition of skill?

I recall in one of the live letters, Yoshida admitted that he designed BC in a way that he only expected the top 5% of the player base being able to clear it - and it was indeed that difficult: BG was the only team that cleared T5 before the twister nerf and even to date, I think the % of players who cleared T5 remains a very minority.

Given this and that it's a locked out content, the loots itself is like some form of "trophy" for those players who are always asking for some forms of trophies. Before people even clear T5, any T4 loot that players owned are like some big achievement trophies and people are like "hey look at my T4 boots" to "show off" that they earned them via skills (since you can't depend on Primals, they are being sold all over the place).

And the recent patch 2.16 they have added stuff like Paragon Gown, another trophy item to show that you have lots of times to spare for the game and cleared 3,000 FATEs.

Yup, trophy gears they are meant to be.
