    Just a thought.
Or perhaps I can voice my opinion against this on this thread where the CM will see it. Just a thought. I also like how you think when I mention racism/sexism/homophobia it'd be exclusively people in jest. I think you have a naive view of the internet and an overly optimistic view about how the global channel would turn out. Not to mention the fact that NO POSSIBLE FEATURE IMAGINABLE could empower RMT more.

search should be global chat should stay local.

XIV doesn't have to copy any MMO, but communication is a vital component of MMO games. XIV has very little.
FFXIV need a damn player search the one they have pure caca, ffxi didnt have a global search but you always could talk to anyone and choose party member from anywhere cuz you were forced too and you built a base that way, party searching icon helped while searching to see who want to party. thats how you chated in ffxi and ffxiv should keep it local.
damn SE for leaving out that /search all !!!!

You will lag behind the people who can stomach the global channel if you don't use it since it'll become the main means of communication, thus saying it's optional is only a half truth. It'll also take away endless GM time from letting them deal with the variety of offenses being committed across Eorzea.
That's not even close to true. WOW, Aion and RIFT all have OPTIONAL global chat channels, and you can function in the game perfectly well without ever entering them. They are player moderated for the most part; players can right click and report spamming offenses on a player, which not only sends a notice to specialized GMs, but also mutes the player for the session.

Zone-wide channels are still employed a LOT in WOW, especially for non-city zones, because very few people can stomach LFG and Global Defense chat like you said.

As has already been pointed out, RMT will not be hindered by lack of a public chat channel. They certainly weren't hindered by the absence of such a channel in FFXI, so I don't see why you think it would hinder them in FFXIV.

As for people making offensive comments, I'm aware that it wouldn't always be in jest, but that's what the /blacklist feature is for. If you really don't like the things that another person is saying, and you find them offensive, then just add that person to your blacklist. Problem solved.

Though you seem to think that we would never see anything BUT offensive, hateful comments, which is simply untrue. Sure, we'd see the occasional troll, but you're exaggerating both the severity and the frequency of the problem.

Haha, no. I think easily there will always be an idiot on at all times saying stupid things this is a war the GMs won't be able to win, it's too easy to make a character. I'm also absolutely positive this will cause an RMT explosion, especially if it were implemented as the game became more popular. I guarantee it. There literally isn't a better tool imaginable for them short of compromising our emails.

Once again, if you can't handle people saying things you dislike, then you shouldn't be on the internet in the first place.

Personally, I think it's hilarious when people get on and start making a fool of themselves. It's great fun to watch.

As for RMT shouting advertisements, they're easy to ignore. You don't have to get all upset and have an aneurism every time you see a line of text offering their services. Just report them, let the GMs take care of it, and move on with your life. It's not a big deal.

Yes, if you aren't in favor of a global chat channel, you must immediately cease your usage of the entire internet. Got it. I'm done here, have fun, CMs, you've seen my points, please make sure the opposition is also heard by the dev team. I'm not looking forward to having some little 12 year old KKK wanna'be spouting off each night when I'm trying to play Final Fantasy, I'd hop on Xbox Live if I wanted that experience.

You have to pay $1 per extra character in FFXIV. I really, REALLY don't think people will be quite as willing to make troll alts in this game.

Sorry, but communication is what online games are all about. Sure, some people tend to become jerks in the anonymous environment that the internet provides, but that's the nature of the beast. If you can't deal with it, then online games are probably not for you. But castrating people's ability to communicate is certainly not the ideal solution. This is the Age of Information, after all, and information must flow.

Personally, I think the $1 fee for extra characters should be abolished, but that's another topic altogether.
