If you can't handle people cracking jokes or talking about their lives, then you probably shouldn't even be on the internet in the first place, let alone playing social video games on the internet.

Or you know, I'm not interested in hearing people brag about how high they are while I'm trying to play a videogame for the sake of my enjoyment.
As has already been pointed out, RMT will not be hindered by lack of a public chat channel. They certainly weren't hindered by the absence of such a channel in FFXI, so I don't see why you think it would hinder them in FFXIV.Or perhaps I can voice my opinion against this on this thread where the CM will see it. Just a thought. I also like how you think when I mention racism/sexism/homophobia it'd be exclusively people in jest. I think you have a naive view of the internet and an overly optimistic view about how the global channel would turn out. Not to mention the fact that NO POSSIBLE FEATURE IMAGINABLE could empower RMT more.
As for people making offensive comments, I'm aware that it wouldn't always be in jest, but that's what the /blacklist feature is for. If you really don't like the things that another person is saying, and you find them offensive, then just add that person to your blacklist. Problem solved.
Though you seem to think that we would never see anything BUT offensive, hateful comments, which is simply untrue. Sure, we'd see the occasional troll, but you're exaggerating both the severity and the frequency of the problem.

search should be global chat should stay local.
FFXIV need a damn player search the one they have pure caca, ffxi didnt have a global search but you always could talk to anyone and choose party member from anywhere cuz you were forced too and you built a base that way, party searching icon helped while searching to see who want to party. thats how you chated in ffxi and ffxiv should keep it local.XIV doesn't have to copy any MMO, but communication is a vital component of MMO games. XIV has very little.
damn SE for leaving out that /search all !!!!
Haha, no. I think easily there will always be an idiot on at all times saying stupid things this is a war the GMs won't be able to win, it's too easy to make a character. I'm also absolutely positive this will cause an RMT explosion, especially if it were implemented as the game became more popular. I guarantee it. There literally isn't a better tool imaginable for them short of compromising our emails.
You have to pay $1 per extra character in FFXIV. I really, REALLY don't think people will be quite as willing to make troll alts in this game.Haha, no. Sorry, but communication is what online games are all about. Sure, some people tend to become jerks in the anonymous environment that the internet provides, but that's the nature of the beast. If you can't deal with it, then online games are probably not for you. But castrating people's ability to communicate is certainly not the ideal solution. This is the Age of Information, after all, and information must flow.Yes, if you aren't in favor of a global chat channel, you must immediately cease your usage of the entire internet. Got it. I'm done here, have fun, CMs, you've seen my points, please make sure the opposition is also heard by the dev team. I'm not looking forward to having some little 12 year old KKK wanna'be spouting off each night when I'm trying to play Final Fantasy, I'd hop on Xbox Live if I wanted that experience.
Personally, I think the $1 fee for extra characters should be abolished, but that's another topic altogether.

You could say the same thing about /shout as well. It still didn't stop all the RMTs that sent me tells.Haha, no. There are two ways I see that a global chat would be implemented. One way would make it equivalent to /shout. /all, for example. Everyone in the game would be signed up to it be default, and if someone in Gridania wanted to be annoying, he could spam the entire server, no problem.
The second way is to have many channels, each for a specific topic (looking to party, crafting, gathering, selling, etc.) that people would have to manually join before they could take part of.
Most people arguing against a global chat system seem to be saying they don't want that first option, ignoring the possibility of a second option. But I don't think many (or anyone) in this thread wants the first option. MMOs are too dynamic to have one global channel that would fulfill everyone's needs. Hence why it would be best split into multiple channels, each with a specific focus.
