And I don't think anyone is saying that there aren't more important issues. But the thing is, changes doesn't come quickly or easily. If they see this as something that people are interested in, they can start planning it out, fit it into the queue and maybe have something ready later on.
While I agree there was room for improvement, zone wide shouts for instance, I would much rather the dev team spend their time make our LS's more manageable with things like /lsmes, letting us kick inactive players, switching LSs via text command, etc, etc. Those are things that everyone wants, and ASAP.

I'm pretty sure it would probably be the same team working on these types of things, and within that small category, Global chat would be at the bottom of the list in my book.

Yup, I agree with that. Linkshells need a lot of TLC. /ls is the original, albeit limited, global chat mechanism. The team that works on one could conceivable work on the other. Hopefully they can fit in some of these updates sooner rather than later.

Yes it is true that global chat often times becomes a cesspool of junk. I won't deny that. However, global chats are often the most helpful when it comes to new players asking for help. It becomes a recruitment tool for linkshells. It becomes a searching for party members tool. It does a lot of things all because you can communicate with other people who won't necessarily be in twenty steps of you. The current tools are not effective for assembling groups nor meeting new people.

If you insist on playing in the dark with only talking to a limited number of people. That's perfectly fine and I won't try and stop you or sway your opinion. You can just toggle the chats off and it will go back to what it is now: complete silence.

Furthermore, the more successful features this game accumulates the better off it is at surviving and becoming a worthwhile game. XIV doesn't have to copy any MMO, but communication is a vital component of MMO games. XIV has very little.
I couldn't agree more. Chat channels aren't just for general chat, they can server a variety of purposes.

This game has a bit of a learning curve, and having chat channels is a great way for new people to ask for help. Expecting them to just join a LS to get that help is a bit unrealistic, since some people want to test the waters first.

Other various uses have been detailed throughout this thread.

It would definitely need to have the option to turn it off.

Plus, I'd like to see them split into categories, such as general, trade, looking for party. And make each a toggle, so you could, for example, turn off general chat, but see trade or looking for party.

As someone who's playing FFXI right now, I don't know what imaginary Jeuno you experienced, but of the 4 server's I've been on, Jeuno has been nothing but a place for people to prove how ignorant they are shouting rude garbage and fighting with eachother constantly. A global channel will be infinitely worse.

Perhaps there could be a city-chat channel, which would be like the city-wide chat channels already suggested, except that all the cities would share a single chat channel, instead of each city having its own individual and separate chat channel.

For example, you could type the following:

    /city Hello everybody!
And your message would be seen by everyone in Gridania, Ul'dah, and Limsa Lominsa, but not by people in any other non-city areas.

This would enable people to easily stay "in the loop" from any city in the game, at least as far as parties, Linkshells, player-organized events, etc. are concerned. That way, you can still stay in touch with the rest of Eorzea's adventurers (i.e. other players), regardless of which city you happen to be in, but you also wouldn't have to worry about an endless stream of spam if you were out in the field doing a mission or something.

Or the far more like /city HEY I'M DRUNK GUYS *GENERIC WOMEN KITCHEN JOKE* *STUPID RACIST JOKE* *BRAGGING ABOUT SOME THING X DID* *Y SAYS WHAT X DID ISN'T WORTH BRAGGING ABOUT*

You will lag behind the people who can stomach the global channel if you don't use it since it'll become the main means of communication, thus saying it's optional is only a half truth. It'll also take away endless GM time from letting them deal with the variety of offenses being committed across Eorzea.

If you can't handle people cracking jokes or talking about their lives, then you probably shouldn't even be on the internet in the first place, let alone playing social video games on the internet.

Or you know, I'm not interested in hearing people brag about how high they are while I'm trying to play a videogame for the sake of my enjoyment.

Then perhaps you'd be better suited to single-player, offline games.

    Just a thought.
