They do have a meaning; it's the strength of the piece of gear. ilvl 90 > 80 >70, etc., it's quite simple and rather efficient. And I'm not even going to bother responding to your "quote".

You know what else shows you the 'strength' of the gear? The stat numbers. Ilvl may be 'efficient', but its also babying and sad.

Item level isn't some arbitrary cosmetic number.

The entire code base for items revolve around it's level to determine stat caps.

i.e. if a developer wants to 30 STR on an item, he HAS to raise the item level to the appropriate level get it.

I just can't wrap my head around this. Why do we need to see the number then?
