Move the taskbar to the top of your screen, and make it auto hide. Open a game in window mode, but with your max screen resolution. Drag and drop so you can't see the border. Problem solved.

I know that I personally get lower performance when I do that. And considering my PC barely runs FFXIV on medium-low settings, this isn't an option for me. It may be a solution for others though.
I have a decent rig and in order to play FFXIV on high settings it needs to be in fullscreen, when i go to windowed i have to drop to medium settings. I personally cant wait for them to just fix the problem and allow alt + tabing the program without crashing, its pretty elementary (seeing as every other game including crysis allows alt tabing) to still have your program crash from alt tab in fullscreen.
