FFXIV has sold ~1.5m units as of Sept 30th (and likely more now), but has 600k current subscribers. That means more than half of the people that bought game, are no longer playing it. That said, 600k is still a good number and above SE's expectations, which pleases the executives to keep wanting to put money into the game.

We need to see down the road, because I don't think people in their free month (almost everyone that bought it in October) counts as a subscriber.

The people who bought the game in October also don't count as any of the 1.5M reported sales of the game as of Sept 30.
But I agree that these numbers are just data points on separate charts and we can't form any conclusions or trending info from them.
