Well if crafted gear was better than DL, I'd go that route, but it's not. And what crafted gear is better, costs way to much. Who has 5 mil gil laying around with no reliable Gil Fountain in the game?

Free companies do. My FC has been working together to make the I level 70 crafted gear.

Materia honestly does seem kind of worthless in this game, for the most part. Endgame crafter/gatherer gear uses it, and if you manage to have millions to craft HQ iLVL 70 stuff with multi-melds it's great, but ultimately dungeon gear is just better or in the case of endgame it's good enough to not justify the money unless you want to be a special snowflake. I think the high-end crafted stuff should have not used tomestone-based items to be made really, make it something difficult to obtain but from a crafting standpoint, so you aren't going "lol just buy Darklight".
Dyes should be available to everything, IMO. The only possible exception (even then I think you should be able to) is AF/AF+1.

While we certainly wanted more customizable crafted gears, I'm pretty sure none of us asked for making said crafted gear made pointless by easymode dungeon gears and massive artificial cost increase.
No, if you could dye the AF, people wouldn't be able to tell if it's aF or relic (it's relic, not AF+1, get terminology straight). I don't want to see pink dragoons and yellow black mages either. It's iconic gear that represents the job and shouldn't be recolorable. Only the more generic, not-necessarily-class-specific gear is appropriate to be dyable.
At least let us toggle the helm part of the armor that has the chest and helmet as one!
Whatever you say, I'll pass on black white mage AF and white black mage AF.Having a dye system that only works on trash gear is almost worse than not having one at all; it's just an unnecessary restriction and frustration to place on something that's for purely cosmetic reasons.
Dyeing isn't only available on trash gear, just the usable gear that can be is not easy to get.

Actually if focus on the ones with job systems, and not the ones with character growth systems, the iconic looks do stay fairly consistent for all of them. Colors might change a little bit but they stay incredibly recognizable at a glance. And in the games with the character growth systems instead of jobs, it is a mix of character design vs iconic class look. For example, FFIX's Vivi compared to FFX's Lulu, both are BLM's first and foremost, though Vivi used the iconic BLM look, whereas Lulu did not, also X had a much more flexible character growth system too.The only jobs that have a consistent look throughout FF history are the mages and even those have some variations in style if not color scheme. If dudebro wants to be a WHM with green triangles instead of red they should be able to do so.

If they were to add dye options to the more iconic gear, it would be about what you said with the red triangles versus green ones for WHM, however some of the others like DRG do not really have a spot where a color could easily be swapped and maintain the iconic look.
