nope, that's gonna happen. pvp becomes it own game with it's own culture and it's own set of norms and expectations and abuse of every bug or oversight, or anything which can give a 0.0001% increase in winability. pvp also tends towards homogeny as one set proves to be the absolute superior thing, some particular combination of equipment, skills, and class become end up having the best winability and becomes the most used thing.
this is every pvp in every game ever (dark souls, street fighter, fuck, even super smash brothers...)
then the nerfing begins. when one set becomes the clearly superior set things get nerffed, other things get buffed, PVE suffer for PVP because the PVP crowd pitch a fit once there is officially no reason to play anything other than that one archetype, and the other ones pitch a fit that their stuff gets nerffed and the PVE people pitch a fit because monster x is kicking their arse.

    this does not end well....

@tuseroni: I think with SE's stance against data mining, and no real-time parsing ability, the PvP community of 0.0001%'ers will really be turned off from this game, and that is a bonus for all of us.

As long as they don't make it necessary to do PVP matches to get anywhere in the game (especially equipment) then i will be happy. The poor Oceania players will be screaming with joy should they be forced to pit themselves against USA or JPN connections again. -.- I personally would pay half my weekly income to get a USA connection but its not happening.

For PvE purposes, arena is just for Vanity Gear, because the PvP Gear looks like the best looking gear in the entire game, if the concept art is anything to go by. Can't wait.

The name thing doesn't bother me a lot, although I agree that having actual player names would be better.

Random question: Is there any info about what the PvP system will be? I hate WoW's arenas and GW2's Structured PvP mode... I have never been a fan of those kinds of systems. I much prefer Battleground-style content. Ultimately, I play FF14 for the PvE, but if there was indeed a battleground style pvp system coming, I think it would make my month ^^

The first PvP content is a simple arena battle, in 4v4 light party and 8v8 full party flavors at level 30, 40, 50. Last team standing wins. I wrote a brief info page about it here: http://ffxiv.gamerescape.com/wiki/Ca...Player#Rewards . This was written based on my personal experience and knowledge with it. I played the crap out if it during beta 4. Please be aware though that since this info was taken from beta 4, it is subject to change.

Later on, there will be more elaborate, objective based PvP. The only other one we know of is something called "Frontlines", which we know next to nothing about, but a lot of people are guessing it would be something sort of like Alterac Valley in WoW.

TL;DR: If you want to PvE, stay on FFXIV :°, if you want to PvP, install a real PvP game.
this is honestly a pretty stupid thing to say. It is well-established that Yoshida is a fan of PvP, and they are taking their time with it in FFXIV because they want to do it right. I don't know where you're getting this idea that PvP in FFXIV won't be "real." They are making armor sets for it, special actions, it seems to me they're pretty serious about it.

Delivering the PvP option in a PvE based game is one thing, but after, that's the players who make the PvP, and unfortunately I can tell you straight away that PvPers won't be on this game, so what's the point of progressing in PvP here, becoming one of the "bests" and get bored because you don't find any real challenge? Because this is what will happen.. oh probably you'll have a few good surprise making you smile sometimes, but that's it. That's why I think, instead of wasting some time on a pseudo PvP game, it would be better to challenge on a real one, with valuable opponents and leave the all resources for developing that PvE theme park.

Same goes for builds, every MMO I have ever played involves cookie cutter builds, especially for raids, in that respect PvE is worse than PvP, there is usually far more freedom with PvP, because things like CC are actually useful, and you are far less likely to be told what build you must play than in a raid.

And again the same goes for abusing bugs, last MMO I played was GW2, it was full of people abusing bugs / exploits to avoid mobs or cheese the boss in dungeons.

Lastly in most MMOs it cuts both ways, PvP also suffers due to PvE, in many games it suffers a good deal more as tehy balance for raids first, then PvP second, but regardless, as far as I am aware in FF14 there will be an entirely separate set of skills for PvP, so it shouldn't be an issue.
