To the idea of keeping players within the party until they can log back on, well, imagine people force DCing just to chicken out of battles and claim loot. You can probably tell that I have a strong sense on how a community will be like and just how much they will abuse game mechanics just because they can.
Another solution to the problem of rotating members is instanced content and/or just dont make bosses that take an hour to kill. The problem was unique to FFXI only, I've never played another MMO that had the rotating members issue. If they keep the bulk of the content instanced (via guildleves or instanced dungeons) then it's a non factor, allow 1 party to enter and that's it.

It's not complicated. =/
