A difference in translation from Japanese to English, German or French is not an excuse for such an uncreative name in my eyes. You can talk about this all day, but do you honestly think red mage or blue mage is the best names out their to define what the classes irrespectively from the game's history or decisions are.
A difference in translation mean something though hence why the phrase "Lost in translation" exists. I already said their best names are their original names (Japanese), hence why in FFXIV it's even more generic than saying "Blue Mage" or "Red Mage", because even to people who don't play FF games they generally know what they are since FF isn't an obscure entity of a series.

As for your other reply? If people are playing XIV just because it's another MMO but never played other FF games yet it's clearly a part of another series like how WoW was a part of the warcraft series? You'd kinda assume people would want to learn about things in the series since like XI it generally reference and nods to the entire series up to that point.
