It worked for FFXI though:

These designs have pretty much been their staple appearance throughout the series, Blue Mage having different designs since they're different in each game but generally the same concept. The names of FFXIV may make sense to the west, but they're generic and tasteless in the original version which is why the naming was proposed in the first place, especially because throughout the game's history everything is linked to certain jobs, like Dual Cast was the main trait/spell/ability of a Red Mage.
That was what the problem with FFXIV, instead of having defined classes, we were all basically freelancers who use different weapons.
Also, Dark Magic:

It's not on the same level as Black Magic, but it is their unique spell line. That's why I say it's nicer to know the lore and history of things so it would make sense, because outside of FF a lot of stuff doesn't make sense, just like to non star wars fans, the only thing people know are: "Luke, I am your father." As it's heavily referenced and parodied throughout all time.
This game has 3 classes, melee, archer, and mage. I doubt anyone actually cares about the actual class names, and cares more about how boring/bad/un-unique the classes are.

I can't wait to make my THM/RDM. Or would be a GLD/RDM better?

I have to thank Square-Enix for the amazing job they have done recreating Final Fantasy XIV from Scratch. Especially the inclusion of Missing Genders which we petitioned for in good faith. This was proof to us players that the Developers are truly Sympathetic to our requests and that being honest and vocal can pay off with the amazing characters we have who are Female Roegadyn, Male Miqote, and Female Highlanders. Thank You SE, Thank You Community Team, Thank You Yoshi-P.

Good grief people, they're just names. There are plenty of things in this game that need revision that are far more important than what name you tag on to a skillset.
The classes/jobs which are in turn linked to the battle system are among one of the biggest problems in this game.

Theres nothing wrong with the classes. Jobs haven't been introduced yet, as such roles also haven't been. Right now the biggest problem is its up to the player to chose what role they want to perform in a party and then load out their character with the skills appropriate to that Role. The Job system will implement roles for players to follow.
