    I'm still very excited for fisher. They could have used the same UI/minigame that miner and botanist have, but have purposefully gone an extra length. Hints about group activities and boats excite me too. It sounds reasonably in-depth with the weather/location/bait resulting in different size fishes and if there are weekly competitions and rewards (a la FFXI), that would be cool too.

    I'm not too bothered about every other fish no longer being an ingredient for sand. It's good there are still CUL and ALC recipes that use fish.

    Don't really get why pplz are being so negative about it. Just because it didn't make it into B3? That's silly. We'll get a chance to play it before launch, if it's going to be your reason for subscribing or not. Everything else that's been mentioned makes it sound like it's going to be great!

    While I don't like bringing attention to information gleaned from dats, Fishing will still have an economic impact in the game.

    I know this isn't the exact problem people are having with fishing, but even if the mechanics are made a little simpler, there is still at least a reason other than "personal achievement" that fishing will remain relevant.

    I don't see enough seafoods in the top levels, and all of those recipes are identical to 1.0. Only alchemist really has anything new.

    A little more insight into fishing. I had Rein translate some of the provisional ability names and he was able to find a small blurb about it via a Famitsu interview. Thanks again for the translation Rein!

    For Fisher are you thinking of a way to make them useful for other players like other Gatherer/Crafter classes?
    Yoshida: In previous FFXIV they were used in recipes. Like requiring fish scales for a part of armor. As a game it's good to have it but when making a game it's easy to fall into making all classes the same "This class can do this so this class should be able to do the same". This balancing, making all of them the same would be boring, and to make something more complicated (more parts) would cause inconvenience to the players. I don't want to put in the games foundation where it forces player to do stuff (make it more complicated).

    That is why we haven't released Fisher in beta test phase 3, Fisher is a class where people really want to enjoy roleplay fishing, but at same time you'll need to choose the fishing rod, bait, setup, and think about the types of water, I was really undecided till the end but if you drop a line in cloud of sea you will be able to fish living in the clouds. Also fishing in quicksand. At first I said it's No Go but they really wanted to do it, they said just being water will make it too small (scale), they pushed saying this is Fantasy (laugh). So I told them if they can make it very persuasive then it's OK, the person in charge is working hard at making the data. I'm cheering them on!

    ... What? Fishing in quicksand? So fishing won't be only at water now?

    I swear this whole fiasco only goes two directions. With every small bit of news it either gets more depressing or more confusing.

    I still completely disagree with him that complication is a bad thing. Oh noez, forcing the player to do stuff... God forbid we actually have to PLAY this video game. Honestly...

    Yeah.
    I mad a linkshell during 1.0 called "Harvesters of the Sea" (yes, inspired by the song "Fisherman" by Primus) on Sargatanas, but never got around to inviting anyone 'cause it was almost the end of 1.0. If you wanted though, I could invite you at Phase 4 or launch. :B

    Technically quicksand is a body of water. That's why it's quicksand, because it's sand thinned out with enough water to make you sink into it.

    Some stuff on Fisher-


    GE: It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything about fishing. Can you tell us how it’s going to work and when we will be able to try it?

    Yoshida: Fishing will be available starting in phase four of the beta test. Players can check it out then. We mentioned before in a Producer’s Letter live, but the concept that we have for fishing in FFXIV is that we didn’t want to make it action based. We didn’t want actions like a battle class has, or to be pressing buttons at certain times like it was originally. Rather, we want to have players just go to a lake or river or ocean, and have players, depending on what type of water it is and maybe what time of day it is, choose which rod you are going to use, and maybe what bait or lure you are going to use. The concept is that fishing is supposed to be a conversation with nature. We wanted the fishing in fourteen to be representative of that.

    We really wanted it to be something you can do in the free time that you have. For example, you go into the duty finder and while waiting in the queue, you can change to fisher and fish a little bit, and when your number comes up, change back and go. Or if you are waiting on a friend to log in. To be able to do something in that downtime that’s fun, but relaxing.

    GE: Are there going to be any types of actions you need to do while fishing? We have seen comments that this could be easy for RMTs to bot if there are no actions to take.

    Yoshida: Even now, RMT can create bots to get around the timing of actions. What we don’t want is to have fishing become stressful. It is supposed to be a relaxing thing. Pressing extra buttons for actions is going to create that stress. We’re going to make sure that the stuff you get from fishing is not stuff that is going to be lucrative for RMT. The system needs to be relaxing.

    What we want is for fishing to be more about what you’ve done. So maybe achievements for catching certain sizes of fish? Or having a log that keeps track of your own collection of what you’ve caught before, or how big a fish you’ve caught before, or whether you have fished in all fishing spots? Having things that are connected to you.

    This is not to say we’re not thinking of other things. For example, maybe you fish up a treasure map, and that map leads to a new quest- we are planning things like that.
