you both make a great point. but that's generally why there are raid leaders and officers ;P the most important thing really is that people are able to listen and react in real-time, but being able to give feedback when necessary is vital as well (ie: calling out who you're raising so nobody else wastes time trying to raise the same target)

for sure. my LS's core group is pretty social on vent. raids and LS events have mandatory vent attendance, but for stuff that isn't required it's optional- though we still encourage people to get on and shoot the breeze with us to encourage brotherhood and all that. getting along well and having good synergy is important to what we do, and vent has helped a lot with that. and when we're not doing serious stuff we're a bunch of jokesters.

but LS chemistry is a lot like real life chemistry, and just as a lot of people don't necessarily mesh that well with coworkers irl and wouldn't stick around after work to chat, i think voice chat in MMOs is pretty similar.

i think maybe you may possibly have a slightly different idea of what 'end game' is

not all game content is created equal. it would be foolish to assume that, based on not needing voice chat in the content you've experienced, it also wouldn't be necessary for anything you haven't

I never had a problem with chatting. The problem is the people who are elitists who cry all the time on chat whenever a raid goes wrong, or cusses someone out for making a mistake, or rages t everyone because people are not "doing it right".

I have a great LS who raids a lot and does none of that. We are all super friendly with each other. But I think I was just lucky, lol. A lot of the raid groups I was in would insist on some form of chat, only because they wanted to be heard when they berated and insulted you and whined about how much everyone else sucked. Most of the people who insisted on voice chat were primed and ready to do just that. Luckily, my LS never insisted on it, and they were nice on voice chat. Strangely enough, we did awesome on group activities as well (farmed the crap out of the primals). I guess you just have to get lucky with the right guild/LS when it comes to voice chat.

LOL I hate that. It's a sure fire way to make sure nobody has fun. Crybabies and blame-gamers get the banhammer!

I use my mic almost al the time playing ffxiv and other mmos I play when I'm waiting on 2.0 to release. Actually I met my gf playing ffxi and chatting on Skype now we moved in together but that's a story for another time! I think using mics on ffxiv is more personal and let's you become closer to your ls members (wether or not you get to meet them eventually irl).

I hate voice chat with a passion. I get on TS occasionally because it was required for certain instances. But I never turned my mic on and most people were ok with that.

Part of the reason I dislike voice chat is because I have a family (I am a parent not the child lol) and playing with headphones and a mic is not conducive to playing around my family unless its way late at night.

Its funny the amount of people who say things like "Mumble or GTFO" but they have no concept of the type of different playing environments being used. I think they must be loners who sit in a room and yell at the computer all night. I enjoy playing ffxiv socially (with other people watching, commenting) and that's hard to do if you're glued to you mic/headphones.

I used mumble on swtor with the guild I usually don't talk unless I have a question with content that I haven't done yet to know what to expect and their very understanding. Its a very useful tool on endgame content and usually use it mostly for that and they don't expect you to use it if you don't want to but guild leaders do recommend it. The guild leaders make sure that its known to new members so they don't feel that they are force to do it if they don't want to.

so if people don't have families (your choice btw) or don't play socially, they're angry loners?

    stereotypes much?

(and you realize there are stereotypes associated with your own demographic as well, yes?)

Used to use Teamspeak on FFXI to talk to my LS during events and randomly, mainly just talked to 5-6 people though as it was rare to get more than that on the mic.

Typing in XI worked well because people actually seemed to have a brain, and things weren't stupidly complex when it came to mechanics unlike so other MMO's where you have to hold the keyboard in your mouth and play with your feet to avoid the doomray...

Talking is more personal IMO, some people like it, some don't. Me, I'll talk if I know the people well enough, but generally otherwise I prefer typing.

Same sitch for me. The noise my PC fan makes and the tapping/clicking of the inputs is sometimes enough to wake my toddlers up. Talking after 8pm (curiously when my gaming time starts...) is a big no-no. Am happy to listen, but all these non-English English-speaking accents mucking up my earhole confuses me.

Someone made a statement in another post about FFXI not being about watching a battle, but really being about reading a battle in the chat log... so in XI few people really needed to use a voip for doing the more intense battles because chatting in the log was effiecient; thats where everyones eyes were already.

In other games, such as WoW, voips make more sense because you don't follow the log as intently. You pay attention to the 50 add-ons that make you more effiecient in battle, and anything that needs to be said between players, can literally be said through the voip. ^_^

Anyway, that being said, I love using voips - i still prefer vent over them all.
