Depends on the position you're trying to sway me to, honestly, but if you're trying to persuade me that we shouldn't allow people of the same gender to marry, you'd have to prove that children raised by a committed same sex couple who are married are significantly worse off than children raised by a committed opposite sex couple who are married.

It's the term 'Marriage' which takes the issue out of the game and propels SE headfirst into RL politics and culture.

But as you'll see, many advocates here won't settle for something like 'Soul Pairing', because they want SMM by name in as many places as possible to use as leverage in the larger RL social discussion, in addition to having the in-game relationship of their choice.
Oh I agree, in the last thread on this topic there were some really good suggestions for alternative names. think the one I liked was binding of hearts or something, it sounded really cute and love-y, haha. I'm quite surprised they chose to stick with 'marriage' since many people were fine with the alternative name idea and apparently the Japanese players feel the same.

    My lala two cents:

    1. I would like to see 'any two characters' able to form a union (get married) in game regardless of their gender. As I believe it to be the most 'fair' to all players...as this is NOT the real world and people play cross-genders etc.

However, currently there are 678 responses to this topic...in less than 3 days. 68 pages worth of discussion. (Not to mention the dozens of forum discussions that have appeared on this very same topic in the past) So I also believe that Yoshi P. and SE made a very ASTUTE observation that currently, this topic is far too sensitive to play out in the game. Keep in mind, the posters in this thread are also primarily English-speaking for NA/EU and not the entire playerbase/cultural demographic. Once you start understanding this is a world-wide game, and that the topic of same sex marriage is more or less accepted depending on the part of the world you are in, that just adds even more headaches for SE. (If this is an issue that divided the NA/EU audience so strongly, just imagine the division that happens in 'less open' cultures)

So while it is a shame that in a fantasy, completely pretend world, that we can't just allow to characters to marry because they want to, it really is the best thing from a business standpoint. (and this comes from someone who strongly supports gay marriage rights in RL). But really, if you really, really, really want to get married in game (whether you are straight/bi/gay), just make sure the person you wish to woo is opposite-gender in game as you...and since we can change our characters in ARR one time, and if getting married in game is the most important thing to you then this is the best option atm.

PS: I think SE should scrap calling it 'marriage'. They shouldn't even allow it to mimic a marriage perse and instead should create it around a strong bond of friendship loyality and trust. Call it a player bond/ bond of friendship/bond of trust...etc instead, allow anyone who wants to be joined as a bonded pair, bond and be done with it. This avoids 98% of the drama.

Their position is emotional and they won't be convinced by any arguments.. ever. - they just FEEL strongly about this and are the most vocal. These people will often view the opposition as homophobes, bigots, haters, despots, etc.

    2) People who are caught up into the latest cause de celebre (often passively). These people want SSM because the believe it to be popular or because they don't want to be treated as a wet-blanket, or ridiculed, or excluded from anything. These people put out very weak arguments for SSM and typically just say: "Why can't we all get along" or "If someone wants to do 'X', who are we to say they can't?". These people will frequently modify or change their position solely depending on what their friends, media, or other perceived popular sources are saying. (These types would be equally opposed to SSM if you asked them a mere 10 years ago)

Reading through the posts, its pretty easy to sort them into these two categories. And it's why arguing over it is largely useless.

I trust SE to do what's in their own best interest, and from my vantage point, implementing SSM is much more of a sticky issue than just staying out of it. In fact, I've said implementing ANY marriage in FFXIV is a silly/stupid idea.

SSM in a game not even an issue. Why make issues out of Real crap in a factius world.

IRL in America at least I do support Gay rights not because I have friends that are gay or I
feel any kind of Emotional conection to the Issue. It's because this is American, Where we have
found with ourself over Equal Rights. This issue is nothing more then an equal rights issue. Giving
LGBT equal right will not infringe on anybody else's rights and if we don't give them those rights
then I feel the Consitution should be null and void and it would and should be time for Revolution.

The entire Marriage idea should be scrapped.

Well let's look at this problem from this angle.
Hydaelyn is a fiction planet in first place so why should it be bound by our society? It's a fantasy that allow us to be a hero that we wish to be, play with our friends or loved ones and we can not have SSM (but word "marriage" can not be used) because of few ppls care to much about IN GAME life like it's affecting real life?
C'mon! Final Fantasy XIV have rating 16+ from PEGI and children in that age already know about sex and can be open minded unless ther parents are closed minded and telling them obvious lies about "good and evil" of our life but life never is two colored.
I'm open gay and i thankfull for my parents that they have their time spent with me and tell me that sex is not the only one thing in real life, feeling to other person, be it same gender or opposite, is that can be described with word of "love".
And again if we look at BioWare and their games - they created universes where your Male Shep can be gay but it's not forced. It's simply player choice and they give players choice to made. No one ever hold gun near with str8 guy head and say "You MUST be a GAY in this game! Or i'll shoot you!"
This is simply my opinion BUT if SE implement it i'll be happy about that and if they not implement SSM but implement OSM i'll held a little grudge against them because of that only thing... Yeah silly but that will be pinch against me personally.

Worried about "Same Sex Marriage"? Just call it something different. "Union" or "Hitch" perhaps. Use the same word for both same and different sex "Joining".

Will it even be visible to others in-game? like maybe a custom emote? or allow teleporting to your partner's location? Perhaps it's like a mini-free company? Is it permanent?

The religions of the world don't get a say except through official doctrine specifically addressing men playing female Miqo'te marrying women playing male Roegadyn, and all the other combinations, including Lallafel.
