I thought Yoshi said one of the main reasons for not having voice chat in the game was because of sexual harassment. OHH you crazy Japanese.
To me voice chat only works with smaller groups who play together a lot and RESPECT each other. I think they should revisit the idea of a voice-enabled free company function. Maybe a Grand Company item you have to buy for the free company to enable voice over ip or something.... idk....

I don't know about the sexual harassment thing. I think it's more because you cannot get any kind of translation over voice chat, whereas with text, you can.

But introducing voice chat doesn't automatically remove text and auto-translate, so I have no idea where he was getting at with that.

It's too bad that the Ally/Enemy Sign system was such a debacle. It was a great idea that was too limited and horribly implemented.

Why they only allowed it to work in guildleves is beyond me.

I hope they fix it for ARR. It might make voice chat much less necessary if they can get it right.

fixing the ally/enemy sign would go a long way towards making voice chat less necessary. However I don't think it would make the need completely go away.

As an LS leader, I've booted folks for refusing to get on mumble. I don't care if you talk, but for certain instances, you must at the very least, listen in. Refusing to get on mumble is the same as refusing to follow instructions, because if you can't follow instructions that you can't hear.

That's what is being said to us.

The reality is that having built-in vocal chat = more work for SE and higher upkeep costs. When you rent a Teamspeak/Mumble/Ventrilo server, you pay for a reason, that service has a cost.

If SE gives you that service for free, it's a pure loss for SE. (All right it's not a HUGE loss, but still, a loss...) Harassment can be avoided simply by not speaking. In a Linkshell/raid, players in a non-leading position can simply listen to their leaders instructions.

It's less maintenance cost and more implementation cost and the fact that SE has literally never done anything of the like.

Maintaining a VOIP server/service is paltry, and it modernizing the game will have a positive effect on player retention and acquisition. But I really don't think SE is talented enough to do it right (especially since it would be cross-platform), and they probably realize this as well.

Guess i'll be the only one to say not everyone in the MMO community likes to voice chat. it'd be best if SE didnt add something that would segregate the population. I love to voice chat in things like FPS games, just dont prefer it in MMOs.

Nobody is forcing you to use it, just like how nobody is forcing you to use it in FPS games.

I liken Voice Chat to using a cell phone for only voice calls rather than SMS. And really who uses cell phones for only talking these days? Most people find they do a lot more texting then talking.

If SE decides to add Voice Chat to the game, that's fine. But I don't think they will. People won't really use it. It's a nuisance to far to many people and offers no perceivable benefit to them. They do everything needed to connect to the VoIP server only to listen to everyone talking about what area music they like best, or the exploits of one of the group away grinding as they try to level up. And when you are doing something you often hear "who's that? I keep forgetting" and "where's the mage? Wait who is the white mage again?" I've also found I often have no idea who's talking. Names players use in 3rd party VoIP software don't resemble the ones they use in the game.

This would be fairly simple for SE to add, and maybe they will at some point. But don't expect players to embrace it as openly as some might have you believe.

You wouldn't need a server. The most efficient and fastest way is to have each party member directly broadcast each player's speech to the other seven. It's fast and efficient in most situations.
