No, VoIP is better left to dedicated hardware as it puts a hellish toll on any Game Server.

For the game to be successful it should be as inclusive as possible especially to the ps3 playerbase. We already know that they are going to allow add ons like dbm that will make raiding easier for pc players. These differences can add up to a divide

Actually if I remember correctly, they only wanted addons like UI customization, not DBM and such. Again, iirc.

i think what will end up happening is there will be shells demanding for you to at least listen and then there will be ones that will take the time to make macro's and expect players to know what they are doing without waiting for a verbal que from a person (macro exactly the same) if a person needs to hit a button on keyboard to talk each time especially ..you could of just hit the button for a macro instead.

there will be 24man events and the one not forcing vent will have it easier to fill up with players, they can just as easily make people apply on there sites and do strict application processes, just like in ffxi. but they will still end up being easier to fill the ranks. to the point i'll go as far as saying those forcing it will start thinking of not forcing it. but this all depends on a few things. how the population is diverse, if not enough ps3 players or other country languages are on that server. the recent news about separate NA servers and JP servers has me worried ...prior to that i was positive this is what would of happened. /tosses a coin.

either way i've yet to join vent for ffxiv(or tera,d3,gw2)(was forced in swtor and warhammer for a bit then it died) and i'm sure there will always be a few linkshells not enforcing it. pvp i can see people wanting it. it's always changing, people vs people you can't depend on things working basically the same, though just the same a lot of people will just pug it. (even if losing is inevitable) lol. pve specially on farm mode? no one wants to site with head set ..imagine dynamisis events that are basically the same every run but gotta sit on vent rather then macro's and knowledge. 5hrs with a head set no thanks. and doing the same stupid 20min runs over and over and over is even worse then that.

SE new what they was doing not enforcing it, they want everyone to play together, jp, na, eu, ps3. though now like i stated above they are still giving us a chance to divide ourselves threw server locations, hopefully this doesn't impact our game play. if my NA server is empty during JP hours that i still like to play on i will be mad and if everyone is making people sit on vent to listen to them awkwardly talk to the one chick on vent talking to him then i will be very sad.

A somewhat different view. I use mumble and find it invaluable for xiv. I think a few reasons why shells currently require it are that currently everything rotates around speed runs. stopping for 10-15 seconds to type here and there ends up being detrimental to that ever impending clock.

Another point is that while you're typing you can't do much. If you're half way through typing you can't then press 1 2 3 to use your actions or even use a gamepad cos as soon as you press something what your typing is lost or you're 1 2 3 ends up in the chat window and not executing the action its should be.

where voice chat really shines it is doesn't affect your ability to do your jobs while you communicate. in some cases i've seen people run into av and completely balls up because the group runs a slightly different strategy to the one they could do blindfolded. what voice clients do is let people communicate without having to stop. and in many cases thats invaluable at present. be it speed runs, stray adds, things to dodge (eruptions etc) so i kinda thing speed runs are a big chunk of why voip is prefferred by alot of people.

also as someone else mentioned earlier xi was much slower for pretty much all jobs. i could ws on my sam and write a book in party chat while i built tp. and if xiv is going to make combat even faster then it seems there's even likely even less room to type. what i would hope is that typing doesn't interfere with battle. for example if i'm typing "/p ok after this mo.." i can still move around hit hit skills and combos and then carry on "..b change to x job..."

voice chat gives you a huge advantage during boss fights, specially if something doesnt works like it should and you need to improvise. If you have to type it, in most cases it will be too late.

And i aggree FFXI was much slower, i could tank HNM and chat with several friends and check some websites on 2nd screen. Yoshi stated in ARR everything will get faster so typing during fights will be even harder.
