Vanity slots will natrually not add to your Ilvl, and if someone wound up in your content ma party wearing a subliger and a halfrobe, it wouldn't matter because they obviously have the Ilvl to enter that dungeon through content matching.

Some people just dont want to look like every other damn person playing the class/job they play, which is currently what happens when you get end-game gear now, with some color varitions with crafted items. Its the 'cobalt or darklight' look for tanks, its the same blm melded pieces for blm or militia gear, etc etc.
Vanity would make assuming materia MUCh harder - right now I see a BLM wearing felt gaskins I'm pretty damn sure he has that baby melded. Otherwise he wouldn't wear it, he would be wearing his AF.

Vanity destroys item expectations. Now I really do have to check you just to see your real gear. Even your vanity gear may be stronger then your equipped gear. I have to study your character now instead of simply glancing.

Its illogical even under a fantasy aspect. "I want to wear the gear I am not wearing". What? No.

If the system is free, people will run around in the silly costumes meant for town fun and use them for combat. If you can kill a boss with seasonal gear right now you are bad freaking ass. With vanity it will happen all the time - be meaningless, and be retarded (from incredible frequency and constant "funny" someone trying to tell a bad joke over and over).
