    Let's be logical about this.

Why would SE take as much time as they plan to in order to transfer the game data if they didn't have to? What possible benefit would they gain from this? Especially since all eyes are on them right now to get this thing right since they fudged up so badly the first time.

I'm no programmer and I won't claim to have knowledge that I don't. However, I do use a little thing called common sense. SE wouldn't be doing what they are doing if they didn't have to do so. I'm sure they'd rather be continuing to bring in the monthly subscription revenues for as long as they possibly could.

So these arguments about sizes of databases and what actually goes into what they are doing are pretty irrelevant. At the end of the day all that matters is that the company is doing what it has to do.

Thank you, Wynn, agreed. I was just so fed up with people on both sides throwing around numbers that seemed to have absolutely no grounding in fact, so I decided to walk through figuring out the required size myself. It's all academic though, since in the end it doesn't really matter why only that they are.

Except for this idea that they're using the old hardware for the new servers, which would be impossible if they brought 1.x back up (which is the very option we are discussing), concurrently with the beta tests. Ok, not impossible, but prohibitively ridiculous.

i think there should be a CS showing meteor hitting the planet, nice destruction effects, then the servers go offline. that would be awesome

I like you, lets be friends. (I don't normally become friends with hyur, but when I do, they have common sense)

This thread proves that some people are just plain ignorant....

The simple explanation : If you don't understand something and have to complain about it the shut up because you are obviously missing something. Its pretty obvious that the OP knows nothing about server migrations, data transfer or what even a "New Graphic's Engine" entails. He can't even wrap his mind around why SE would offer us some more play time on a game so that way we can have fun still while waiting for 2.0.

The better way is to shut up and deal with it, play the game or don't. Wait for it or don't but don't be the idiot that starts rushing something and is then unsatisfied with the end result because it was unpolished.

I was one of the ones pre 1.0 launch who would keep defending SE and bury my head in the sand when decisions were being criticized saying, "I trust SE". I'm not gonna make that mistake again.

But come on now, they should be way more concerned about making sure the 2.0 launch goes off perfect and not cut any corners this time. Even if it takes longer. Losing existing customers because 1.0 is shutting down really shouldn't be a concern. I would imagine people who have been paying to play this game all this time and all the way through Sep 30 are still going to be quite interested when 2.0 hits. I'm sure if SE could have their way, they would release 2.0 pretending that 1.0 never existed and that 2.0 is the real FFXIV.

I have an entire datawarehouse that records every transaction at the line item, plus a table of 35,000 customers, a table of 350,000 items, about 150,000 invoices each day, with anywhere from 10 to 300 lines on an invoice. And it stores 3 years of data at that line item detail. It's 2.5tb. So SE must be storing information on where every grain of sand in thanalan is, every leaf in the shroud, and every idiot in la noscea.
I have been doing some voluntary work at my local council, I checked out their datacenter and they had (for all their data combined across all sites, including Active directory databases, Exchange, software based SANs etc) at least 100TB of storage, that's just for user areas (each user gets a quota of data) They have at least 50TB of that (stored on 2TB hard drives connected to the SAN) just for exchange, which as I'm sure you know primarily for emails, this is for about 5-10k employees. Now put that into the perspective of FFXIV with 400k accounts, yeah if a company needs 50TB for emails its really not out of the question for our FFXIV characters server side to be at least 40TB.

E-commerce is nowhere near the same as a MMORPG, MMOs need to store a lot more data than most servers. Yes the majority of the client side is the graphics, but the server side is every little bit of information about our characters, from what weapon you have equipped all the way down to that little scar you made on the back of your hand.

And lets not forget the need to do a thorough checksum after all the data has been converted, if the rush that it will overlook any errors or corruptions, so they will be doing slow checksums, on this much complex data this will take at least 1 week.

They know there are problems with the existing server hardware so Mr. Knowitall what would be the benefit of recycling server hardware, they spend millions to rebuild the game from the ground up just to not solve anything? This is FFXIV's last chance, it fails at ARR its dead and SE wants the income.

Your post lacks any logic, if there is any please point it out to me.
so you are saying transcoding video takes less time than pushing some bytes around with a minimal static transformation?
you really got me on that one!

They have a new engine, this will probably be coded in a different language, so they are transcoding entire 1080p game graphics to a new format, so yes it will take a lot longer than video, its not just "pushing bytes around" as you put it.

It seems very few people know exactly what SE are doing here, they seem to think its just copy and paste, which its obvious its not.
