Would you still want to continue playing the current version of FINAL FANTASY XIV after November 11, 2012, even if none of the character data accumulated beyond that date was carried over to your FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn account?

So basically, I can keep playing if I want, but anything I accomplish will be gone. I think not. You're going to lose a massive amount of players saying either a) you can't play for 2 months, particularly over the holiday when a lot of people have time off, or b) you can play, but we're just going to wipe out anything you accomplish.

It should not be that hard to migrate character data to the new system. People that play want to keep playing. I log in and fish in my spare time, or level some jobs, ie make progress in the game. That is completely pointless if you're just going to wipe it. It's like playing FF1 half way through, then the battery in your cartridge dies and you have to start over.

There has to be another way.

You obviously don't understand databases then; and since they are actually changing the database provider (don't ask how I know); it requires more work than you think.

Since XIV is the ONLY mmo in history to relaunch a entirely NEW system which includes some of the following:
Server structure
Database provider and design
Zones
Assets
Music

You might want to cut them a little slack. If this break means the whiners don't come back; I'll be happy. The games been rough; but I'm glad I was here to experience the entire thing from start to finish.

Hundreds of gigabytes doesnt take a few minutes. There is also server hardware installation and reprogramming... There will be alpha for some and probably a fairly large beta.

I mean... would you rather them screw it up like last time? Simmer the hell down.

People can whine "They're gonna lose a lot of players over this" day and night, but the fact is that all of those players they "lost" will be more than interested to see 2.0 when it finally comes out, regardless of whether or not they had to resign the game for a couple of months.

By the time that the 1.0 servers are shut down we should be at least near the start of beta if not already into it.

The reason it will take so long to migrate character data is simple; the new database system is far different than the old one. Instead of just copy/pasting everything over, various things must be changed. I imagine the new inventory data storage system stores the data far different considering it consists of individual sections instead of the list system we have now.

Locations must be changed (x,y,z coordinates) for remodeled areas, stats must be adjusted to fit with the new system, and so on... I personally would rather them take their time with the transfer the data and ensure everything is properly translated than risk losing things.

We will have 2.0 beta to play around with until our characters are ready. That way we can witness content that we may have missed out on using higher lvl and better geared characters.
