I can't wait to play 2.0. I'm not interested in playing past the 11th because that is when the story ends. Giant meteor falls, big plot stuff, awesome ending cutscene that will set the stage for 2.0, pop credits, done. Then I can take a break from MMORPGs for a few months and take in post-Sixth-Astral-Era Eorzea in stride.
And they're not going to lose the playerbase. Too many people who beat Darnus/are trying their hardest to beat Darnus and are now too knee-deep in the plot to get out now. That, and all of the comments on game sites and forums about people who will come back for 2.0 or actually try the game once its released.
But hey, my opinion doesn't matter as much. If the majority of people want the game to be up like some alternative to second life, let it be. For a lot of people it's already like that so I don't get the problem.
Aye. One thing that makes me happy is that they're rebuilding everything. Not just client side but server side as well. I hope that the new system gives better performance to go along with the more fast-paced combat that we are to expect.
As a programmer, I understand the complexity of hte task. However character files are merely that, files. No one in their right mind would store character information in a database. What, a new table for every character? Or one table, with a billion columns with an x for every flag/item/etc? They're stored in files. So, if you even went with a new database, it wouldn't be that hard to write a script to re-write the character files for hte new database format, because new file format for storing character data is very reasonable. However a batch job to convert what, 20,000 character files to the new format? far from difficult.
I'm all about having 2.0 be as great as it can be. However to toss people out is pretty brutal. They are trying to stay afloat, this stuff costs money, and that comes from subscriptions. So as much as folks may want to say "do away with the nay-sayers".

They are not going to lose a massive amount of players over this tiny issue. I would be surprised if anyone left because of it.
All this complaining. How about a big thank you to SE for giving us October for free? I for one am thankful, not only for the free month, but the actual option to vote on a poll for their decision to end it early. I voted no to them extending past Nov. 1st. Just let them do what they gotta do.
For what it's worth, the poll states that they have to migrate the data for several hundred thousand characters. As a programmer, I understand the complexity of hte task. It doesn't matter how simple the task is. What matters is that SE says they need a few months to complete the transfer. We just have to accept that.
We had over a year free, why thank them? If anything they should be charging the people who want the game back up.All this complaining. How about a big thank you to SE for giving us October for free?
