All we can do is wait and find out.
I remember people insisted Materia was going to be a carbon copy of WoW's gemming because we got a few nuggets of information and people ran with it.

Because XI copied nothing from Everquest--oh wait...
Really, the "omg the sky is falling xiv is copying wow" thing is getting old. MMO standards and what's considered the standard MMO kit has changed. Guild Wars II is supposed (with a large grain of salt) to change the standard again, but before it there is/was WoW and before that it was Everquest.
Really, some of you people need to let go of the older designs and get with the times. You don't see me openly bashing Guilty Gear despite my dislike of the changes it brought to the fighting game genre while trying to force the genre back to the days of Marvel vs Capcom 2 and Melty Blood, do you?

* The sad thing is that FFXIV turned RDM into a turret, and people think that's what it's supposed to be. It's supposed to combine sword and magic into something more, not spend the bulk of gameplay spamming spells and jump into melee for only 3 GCDs before scurrying back to the back line like good little casters.
* Design ideas:
Red Mage - COMPLETE (https://tinyurl.com/y6tsbnjh), Chemist - Second Pass (https://tinyurl.com/ssuog88), Thief - First Pass (https://tinyurl.com/vdjpkoa), Rune Fencer - First Pass (https://tinyurl.com/y3fomdp2)
And how is it not ? You get a piece of materia and you stuff it in your armor...... i'm i missing something ?

Are you sure it is not a combination of the card system (extra stats to the gear) and upgrade system (risk to lost all) from ragnarok online? And it is older than WoW
And who knows, maybe ragnarok copied it from FF VII?
