I would love to see Campaign in XIV. Alas, the current engine cannot handle it. ;_;
Well that's all well and good but I wonder how many people it managed to push away with the same design. For just one example, Final Fantasy XI. They maintained a healthy, very loyal and dedicated player base who stuck with the game for 7 or more years, and XI was extremely dependent on RNG based rewards. More than that, it was based on RNG, on top of rare spawns with long periods of time between spawn windows. Still, people hung around, even well after MMO's like WoW and its ilk started popularizing the "casual friendly" route where everything comes easier and faster.
I know you are talking about looking at the game as a whole, but for many people the loot situation is a big part of what keeps them playing and good or bad the casual player base do tend to want things as soon as possible.
It all comes down to what kind of player base SE want to attract or keep in the long run.
Yes people keep saying if you don't sort this we will leave, but you don't just up sticks and leave over night it takes time for things to get to a point where that happens, the straw the broke that camels back so to speak. (this is what happened with me in 11 FWIW)There are people on these forums right now that I've seen complaining about the same things going back for months. They've been making that threat that they and others will quit if SE doesn't do what they want. And yet they're still here. Still playing, and still making that threat. They'll be here months from now doing it as well, guaranteed.
What with Tera, GW2 and Diablo 3 coming out in the next few months SE can't down play the concerns of their player base, they will end up with nobody left otherwise.
I am going to come out and support RNG. The simple reason is, RNG forces limited supply while allowing for the possibility of luck. So you can be hardcore and run a dungeon a million times and chances are yoy will get the item you want. Or if you are more casual, you might run few times and still get said item, although chances are low. This way either play will feel some motivation to engage in content bc regardless of their style their is a chance they will get that item. For hardcores they will have more opportunitieswhile casual will have to rely on luck (or significantly time).
Did my attempt at devils advocate convince anyone?
I have the bigger issue with lockout timer. That 15 min lockout after a win is terrible. I'm playing this game to have fun, but I get locked out of my fun for 15 min after every win. I want to play my game, not wait for a lockout timer.
The fight itself takes about 15 minutes. So basically I'm sitting on my arse for 50% of the time when I want to run multiple hamlet defenses. That is bull crap.
FF14 is getting a little to happy with lockout timers on everything. Stop restricting our ability to play.

1 minute lockout
and lets lower the drop rates from 1% to .01%
cuz thats what your asking for now, thats how this works
shorter lockout = lower drop rate

This is why you need something like the GW2 Karma System XD
I read a book and watch TV between playing my game due to lockout.
I need another hobby to play my hobby because my hobby locks me out.
Yes, this makes perfect sense.

I shouldn't have to go do something else to explore content. If I want to run multiple hamlets, I should be able to. I shouldn't be force to take a break or kill other monster nearby to pass the time.
I shouldn't have to go find other content to fill my time until the magic timer says I can play the content I want to play.
This is a game. I shouldn't have to find other pass times.

whats 15 minutes in between runs?
that gives people bathroom breaks,m smoke breaks, snack breaks, food breaks
also, again, its YOUR choice not to take advantage of other options, the game is not stopping you, you are
granted, would you be willing to have an even lower drop rate as a compromise for no cooldown? im curious, cuz thats the reason our drop rates are so low now you know
