It’s all about money and not just the number of people. People in high income countries have more disposable income and buy more games. German localization is in 5th place after Chinese, English, Japanese and Korean. French is next (mainly France and Canada) followed by Italian and Portuguese (Brazil). For example, Canada has about 1/5 of the total gamers that Brazil has yet video games revenues are twice as much. Spanish, despite the number of speakers, isn’t yet in the top 10 when it comes to video game revenue (though Mexico and Spain are quite big markets and then I think that there would be more players if more games were available in Spanish).

I grew up in Latam and am part of Spanish speaking gaming communities and one of the biggest hurdles my friends have with this game is the sub price as aside from Brazil, there is no sub local pricing for Latam countries. FFXiV is an expensive game to play and it’s subject to currency fluctuation as it’s attached to the USD.

Note that I am not saying that it’s not justified to have a Spanish translation but people at SE only look at the bottom line and while the Latam market is growing fast , it was also much smaller when this game was made than it is today. Culture and unfamiliarity with a market can also play a role. If the game was made today, their decision would possibly be different.

As for having a translation now, it would be good for players but SE has already acquired a base of Spanish speakers and it’d be more a matter of how many more they can acquire.
