Are you saying we should just enjoy what we're getting because we might not get more of it? They're going to give up on their biggest cash cow because people are upset about bafflingly dumb decisions made involving everything that the game is notorious for being well made in?

I'd be almost okay with that. Let's just roll back the game to Shadowbringers, and keep it like that forever. I think I'd rather enjoy that for a while. After all, I can take breaks and come back to see everything right where I left it, and when I run out of stuff to do, make a new character and start over again.
Some might prefer Endwalker or Stormblood. Maybe there should just go the Classic route and let everyone choose their own flavor of FFXIV to stay on. I know I'd enjoy at least giving the old versions of the game a shot.

Also, what do you mean by the "deafening silence"? Do you mean that when the game is no longer being maintained that people will no longer discuss things on the forums?

7.1 was uninspiring to say the least. Sure compared to most post expac patch content it's probably about average, but this time it's coming off the back of a very substandard expac story.

The entire 7.1 MSQ felt pointless. Did we need to know who the little baby lizard's mother was? No. Then they shoe-horned in Koana's parent's revelation...OK...kind of random, but sure. Then, we end with the real meat of some Sphene imposter, which I assume is going to take up the plot of 7.2 and 7.3 before the inevitable pivot to 7.4 and 7.5 setting up 8.0.

I didn't like Dawntrail, it really didn't set up the foundation for anything, so folks saying it is ARR 2.0 ....is it though? Not really. I feel you could delete DT completely and wouldn't miss anything. It really is some extended side quest.

And it's exactly because, as many predicted back in 6.0, they didn't know how to up the "stakes" after we killed god and uber-god in Endwalker.
So they needed to invent some new mcguffin so they can go "oh no, the villain has somehow powered up enough to compete with the universe-ending godkiller that is the WoL."

Looking at Arcadion, its an engaging storyline without a world ending threat.
We could have had nations trying to woo the WoL on their side, because of the implied political power of housing the WoL.
We could have had people forming a cult about the WoL's existence, threatening to overturn the administration of their nation in a pseudo-religious zeal that we could possibly intervene with.
There could be a new rival on the block that tries to one up us.
There are ways to portray issues in the world that are not world ending and still interesting.

We could have had nations trying to woo the WoL on their side, because of the implied political power of housing the WoL.
We could have had people forming a cult about the WoL's existence, threatening to overturn the administration of their nation in a pseudo-religious zeal that we could possibly intervene with.
There could be a new rival on the block that tries to one up us.

But then they wouldn't be able to continue speedrunning the entire setting. DT let them cross off two continents and another shard in just the launch patch.

The stakes don't need to be upped anyways, the WoL is not a god of destruction, every big feat we achive is through the help of many people or with borrowed power. And even without that just because we beat something powerful doesn't mean we have just as much destructive power as whatever we kill. Someone at the level of Gaius would still be a great threat to us, the WoL is still human. (1/14th denser than most thanks to Ardbert, but stil...)
